Vashishta Gufa Rishikesh: My Visit, Timings (2026), History & Travel Guide

When I  talk about the most sought cave  by international tourist in Rishikesh,  is Vashishta Gufa.  Why it is so popular and visited offbeat place in Rishikesh, do you know the reason?  I know very well  the very reason behind its popularity.

I find the reason that this place is totally offbeat and scenic in nature and ancient as old as Indian Yoga tradition, dates back to 1000  B.C.E.  It holds itself lots of spiritual significance and  hosted many extra-celestial divine victors in the past , the most famous extra terrestrial visitors names are Guru Vashishta and his wife Arundhati, they together had been visited this site for their their spiritual retreat .

So, where they both meditated during visit on the earth, left their spiritual  legacy, today called Vashishta Gufa and Arundhati Gufa, both are adjacent of each other along the bank of the Ganges near Rishikesh.

Historical Account of the Vashishta Gufa

Hence, this place visited by the sage Vashishta, and he was  the spiritual guru of god Rama ( seventh incarnation of god Vishnu, ). So, God Rama landed at this site along with his family brother Laxman and wife Sita  during his visit in the Himalayas.  So, what else information required you to visit this place for visitors.  This cave ( Vashishta Gufa ) itself radiating the spiritual and divine glory since the immortal time.

Arrival of Jesus in India

You know, Jesus disappeared for 11-12 years  historically, landed in India in the Himalayan region of India. We have historical and archeological evidence of arrival of Jesus in India, and he came in Rishikesh to mediate beside the cave ( Vashishta Gufa ) . There is also  a small cavity remained, is called Jesus cave too. You see how everything is connected in the spiritual world,  it is not coincidence, it is called god willing.

It is  about 25 kilometers by road from Rishikesh city and takes 45 minutes to reach in private car, and you know very well about Rishikesh  that it is a spiritual pilgrimage site of the world. This town is popular everywhere on the earth except for other planet.  This town hosted  many ancient sages and ascetics , and here they have been performing  austerity yoga and meditation.

Redescovery of the Cave

One of the spiritual seeker how came to Rishikesh in 1929  from south India in quest of  doing austerity and penance along the Ganges to experience the god presence , his name is Swami Purushottamananda , accidently he rediscovered this site and decided to live here till his last breath. You see how sheers seek from nature not a place but feeling of divinity within.

It is open in two slots during the day: First slot from 8 AM to 1 PM and then second from 3 PM to 6 PM.

• Morning Slot: 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM: Visitors can enter and explore the cave during this time.
• Afternoon Slot: 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM: The cave remains closed for two hours from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
• After 3:00 PM, it reopens for visitors to continue their exploration and meditation.

What Say Miss Karen?

Miss Karen  who came to visit Rishikesh every year, in a special conversation with her, she told that she like the Vashishta Cave very much and sitting inside the cave, she does meditation for some time, and her mind became completely calm. She says that this place is completely peaceful, away from the noise of Rishikesh, and everyone should definitely come here at least once.

She says to me that making noise and taking photographs is prohibited inside. She also go each time to sit and meditate at Arundhati cave, and it is also quite famous as Jesus cave among aboard visitors, here are details.

• Swami Abhishiktananda (France) – A French monk and Christian mystic who came in the Himalayas and Rishikesh, seeking  more insight about Advaita Vedanta philosophy  and meditation, so he spend some his significant time .  He was a regular visitor to  Vashishta Gufa  for  meditation.
• Swami Rama Tirtha – History told us that he spent many weeks and  meditated at Vashishta Gufa and  had profound spiritual experiences there, he also interviewed that I hade a vision of Jesus at the bank of the Ganges adjacent the cave .
• Swami Ramdas – This man was very traditional and he came because of  meditation tradition of the cave  and revealed about mystical experiences.
• Sri Sathya Sai Baba  paid a visit the cave in 1957 and later wrote about that it is a mystic.

Lets talk about more about Jesus arrival 

Historically, if  you trace back the Kashmiri tradition’s Rajatarangini, is  one of the most appreciated and authentic   historical chronicles in Indian literature, written by Kalhana around 1148–1150 CE in Sanskrit,

This book described  that there was a great saint, his name was Issana living at Issabar on the bank of Dal Lake. There is another modern book titled “Jesus Lived in India”  throwing on us  additional evidence archeologically of Jesus of the arrival of Jesus in  in the Himalaya region.

Jesus Cave and Arundhati Cave

Arundhati Cave Rishikesh:

It  is a  near the Vashistha Cave. Arundhati, who was the wife of sage Vashistha. In Hindu stories, she is connected to the morning star and the Alcor star, which is connected to sage Vashistha.

Nowadays, modern lifestyles are making our life very difficulty and busy, most of us, do not have time for anything else except work.  So, If you will be spare some time from your busy schedule this site is the best for you , a half-day yoga s and meditation retreats.

The cave  provides enough space at least 10-15 can sit comfortably, apart from this, there is sandy beach on the bank of Ganga, where you can spend entire day gazing river and its flow, listening gurgling sound of flowing water and looing high lofty mountains .

Before panning to visit this place, the first thing you have to consider that It is not a tourist site . It is a special retreat site for peaceful people.  Here,  beauty of the Ganga, the shade of Himalayan Gular trees, chirping birds around,  and the ancient energy of the cave make it a must-visit place for spiritual meditation and self-discovery.
