A Date With The Saint: Kainchi Dham

For a long time, I was feeling to pay homage to this saint. It was as if my brain was filled with lots of energy and wish to of all kinds.  Suddenly one fine morning I decided to go from Rishikesh this fascinating ashram– Kainchi Dham. Even though I didn’t believe in Godmen and women, there was something about this ashram that pulled me. The fact that it was nestled amid the beautiful meadows of Ranikhet just made it even more appealing.

A Little Dash Of History

As I embarked upon this spiritual trip to Kainchi Dham I started to research more about Neem Karoli Baba. While I had heard of him before courtesy of his book ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’, I still didn’t know much about him. Soon enough I realised that he was extremely popular among foreigners and Kainchi Dham tour is bubbling tourist package. Personalities like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg had also visited this ashram.

Several legends and stories revolve around the mystical powers of Neem Karoli Baba. It is believed that he left his home in 1958 and travelled throughout North India to spread his sermons. Several temples were built in devotion to him. His sermons usually consisted of messages about love and non-violence. His followers say that he greeted everyone with warmth and showered them with unconditional love. He is also called the Miracle Baba as his powers were mystical. He allegedly had the power to put devotees into a state of samadhi by just a touch.

My Spiritual Cascade

My journey started when I reached the beautiful city of Nainital. My Kainchi Dham tour package included a day stay at Nainital. Kainchi Dham is about 18 km from the main area of Nainital, and I was already getting hyped. After relishing some scrumptious food, I decided to step into the spiritual realm.

All around me intimidating mountains sang as the raid winded further and further into nature. No horns were blaring, and the city noise died down into a divine silence. It was as if Neem Karoli Baba had blessed the entire path to his ashram as well. After a little while, I could finally see the bright orange coloured dome of the ashram. I peered down from my car, as the Kainchi Dham was still further down the valley.

As I entered the Ashram I realised why it was so popular. I felt a surge of tranquillity come over my entire body. It was as if God was cradling me and giving me warmth. The lovely hum of Bhajans filled my ear, as I saw the devotees singing with fervour in the other room.

The Ashram is extremely airy as it is mostly in the open. As I started to explore more I saw a room with the idols of Lord Rama and Hanuman. There are other idols dedicated to different Gods as well. These idols are kept in different altars. In another room I suspected were the mortal remains of Neem Karoli Baba.

I decided to bask in the glorious courtyard, where the sun softly and gently traverses as if it was also bowing down to the great Neem Karoli Baba. After that, I entered another room which houses a life-like sculpture of Neem Karoli Baba. The sculpture was so beautifully made that I felt that Baba himself was sitting in front of me. I couldn’t move, it was as if an external power had gripped me and I involuntarily sat down. It was cathartic to just sit there in front of Neem Karoli Baba’s idol.

Kainchi Dham also has a well-manicured garden which can put even the colonial-style gardens to shame. It is so well maintained and the flowers are exquisite. My tour of Kainchi Dham included a walk through these lovely gardens. The garden is maintained by the volunteers who work in the ashram.

Kainchi Dham Fair

While I was roaming the corridors of the temple, I learnt of a lovely event that takes place at Kainchi Dham every year. In June, the Kainchi Dham fair commences and devotees throng the ashram. From festivities to food everything is found at large here. It is said that even though thousands of devotees horde the ashram during the fair every day, not once has the food run out. Everyone leaves the ashram well-fed and content. Such is the magic of Kainchi Dham.

While my journey at Kainchi Dham came to an end, the memories certainly did not. If you truly want to take a quick break and feel at peace then Kainchi Dham is the tour for you. You can also simply come here to learn more about the amazing Neem Karoli Baba. No matter what you come for, you will leave Kainchi Dham content and at peace.
