Discover Raghunath Temple Devprayag ( holy confluence of the 2 rivers )

It sits 73 km from Rishikesh on the scenic Rishikesh–Badrinath highway. Raghunath Temple Devprayag is a peaceful holy site in the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers. This ancient temple is constructed in the Deula style. it holds significance in Hindu mythology and is part of the revered 108 Divyadesams dedicated to Vishnu.

History: Raghunath Temple Devprayag

Adi Shankara rebuilt this temple in the 8th century. Later expansions by the Garhwal Kingdom. The temple is sits uphill at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers which marks the beginning of the sacred Ganga River. Raghunathji, worshipped as Lord Rama. it is said to have performed penance here to absolve himself of the curse incurred by defeating Ravana.

Managed by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board, the temple boasts a serene ambiance, and according to local belief, the mythical Sarasvati River flows beneath the deity. Visitors may even come across a small pool of water near the sacred idol.

Temple’s Legends

The temple’s legend associated with life of Shri Ram to the times of the Ramayana. Lord Rama did penance here at current temple in order to get rid of curse. This  area is famous as Prayaga that signifies a supreme place for penance. The Vataka tree, believed to withstand all disasters. The tree stands as a symbol of endurance, with Vishnu said to reside in its leaves.
