The temple  is a sacred place of Shiva, situated on the banks of the holy Alaknanda River. It is near Rudraprayag town within a cave, with the Alaknanda flowing just a few meters away.

In mythology, The demon Bhasmasur tried to destroy Lord Shiva with his powers, Shiva sought refuge at Koteshwar cave and prayed to Lord Vishnu for help. Vishnu intervened and defeated Bhasmasur, saving Shiva.

Koteshwar Mahadev Temple

It is  one of the oldest temples in the region.  it is the very place where Shiva appeared at this spot in the form of a Koti Lingam (a lingam with a crore (ten million) faces). The cave temple has natural lingam, which is still seen in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.
