In June 1970, a young ascetic appeared in a cave near the village of Haidakhan on the banks of the Ganga. Though his physical age appeared to be around 18–28 years, his divine aura drew people instantly. He remained silent for 45 days in deep meditation before revealing his spiritual presence.
Devotees began calling him Haidakhan Babaji, and many identified him as Mahavatar Babaji, the eternal Himalayan yogi. Babaji remained in public life for only 14 years (1970–1984), yet left an everlasting spiritual impact.

Babaji was also identified with Munindra Maharaj (Old Haidakhan Baba), a mysterious yogi believed to have wandered through Kumaon since the late 19th century. No exact birth date is known.
