Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi in Kedarnath is believed to be where Adi Shankaracharya attained Moksha at the age of 32. A great philosopher and theologian, he unified Hinduism’s key thoughts. The Adi Guru Shankaracharya Samadhi is lies behind the Kedarnath temple and is associated with hot water springs, said to be created by Adi Shankaracharya.

These springs are to heal devotees’ sufferings and provide relief in harsh climatic conditions. The current Kedarnath temple is also attributed to Shankaracharya. Swami Swaroopananda of Sharada Peetham expanded the Shankaracharya Samadhi Mandir to 3000 sq. feet.

It is situated about 600 meters from the Kedarnath Temple and can be reached on foot. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes and carry water and snacks, as the walk can be tiring.

Life History of Adi Shankaracharya

There is an old story here is the short note on Adi Shankaracharya:

• Adi Shankaracharya, a prominent Hindu sage, spread the knowledge of Advaita Vedanta. He renovated the Kedarnath Temple in the 8th century and established four Mathas.
• History says he started his journey from Jyotirmath Ashram in Joshimath near Badrinath and traveled to Kedarnath, where he found his final resting place.
• It goes that when Adi Shankara was going to visit his God, he saw a low-caste man in front of him. Without realizing who he was, he told the man to move out of the way. The man just stood there and asked a question: “should I move or should my body?” And that is when Shankara said, with some realization, “That’s me!”
•  Adi Shankara felt so hard, and that was the final day he spoke. Then after he never gave any teaching. He just walked away straight to the Himalayas. No one ever saw him again. So, nobody knows how Adi Guru Shankara died.
