Legends and story

According to mythological folk tales, when the Pandavas lost everything in the game of dice, they also had to undergo exile in disguise.

It is said that when the Pandavas crossed the boundary of their capital Hastinapur and reached Uttarakhand, they, disguised as sages, crossed the Gargi river, which is presently known as the Gola river, and after crossing the mountain boundary (the fort of Kotkhara belonging to the Katyuri and Chand dynasties) — that is, the present entrance of Kumaon, Kathgodam — they moved ahead through Ranikhet and began climbing the mountains.

Chasing the Pandavas, the Kauravas also reached behind them. At that moment, the Pandavas suddenly changed their path swiftly and moved directly towards the peak of Bharatkot, the meditation place of Rishi Gargi, while the Kauravas, tired and exhausted, stopped at Bagwali Pokhar and got engrossed again in the game of dice.

On the other hand, the Pandavas crossed the peak of Bharatkot, the sacred place of Maharaja Bharat, and advanced towards that peak of Doonagiri from where, in the Vedic age, mighty Hanuman had carried the Sanjeevani herb for Lakshman and proceeded towards Lanka.

Meanwhile, the secret informers of the Kauravas reported the presence of five sages at the foothills of the Doonagiri mountain range. The Kauravas then crossed the Gargi river and chased them to the foothills of Doonagiri, but from there they could not move ahead and got confused.

It was then that the Pandavas, from the great herbal forest, that is, the Doonagiri forest region, reached the summit of Brahmaparvat, and that mountain peak where they resided came to be known as Pandav’s shelter, or Pandu Kholi.

Conclusion:
