A Trek to Remember Embarking on a journey to Hidimba Parvat involves a brief and rewarding trek of 1.5 kilometers from Sattal’s foothills. This verdant ascent leads explorers to an exalted zenith, where a temple dedicated to the revered Hidimba Devi and the Vankhandi Ashram await. Crafted 45 years ago by the visionary sage Vankhandi Maharaj, these sacred abodes bear testimony to his spiritual wisdom and love for nature.

A Tapestry of History and Legend

The tapestry of Hidimba Parvat is woven with threads of ancient legend and recent history. As the Pandavas sought refuge in Bhimtal during their exile, the hill provided a dwelling for Hidimba and her brother Hidimb. Hence, the name Hidimba Parvat.

In modern times, the venerable sage Vankhandi Maharaj breathed life into this site, igniting an eternal fire and meditating for 40 days beneath its sheltering branches. The result of his dedication is a splendid ashram and a temple, collectively known as Hidimba Dham or Vankhandi Ashram.

Journeying to the Summit:

A Quest for Serenity To embark on a sojourn to Hidimba Parvat, the passage begins at Sattal, a resplendent haven adjacent to Bhimtal in Uttarakhand. The journey to Sattal is paved with well-connected roads, ensuring ease of travel from Bhimtal and Nainital.

For those commencing from afar, Haldwani, situated 39 kilometers from Sattal, offers a gateway accessible by both road and rail. Meanwhile, Kathgodam stands as the nearest railway station, extending its embrace 32 kilometers from Sattal.

Trekking in Nature’s Embrace

The Hidimba Parvat trek, a brief yet invigorating expedition spanning 1.5 kilometers, unfolds through lush forests. Breathtaking vistas of Sattal Lake and the neighboring Kumaon Hills accompany trekkers along the way. While experienced adventurers will find the journey manageable, it may pose a challenge for those less accustomed to exercise.

The trek takes around 45 minutes to an hour. It’s recommended for travelers to bring water as they walk on the natural trail.

A nice part of finishing this journey is that they give Prasad, which includes Cummin-Potato (Aloo Jeera), fruits, and chai (tea). This tradition has earned Vankhandi Maharaj the affectionate nickname “Aloo Baba.”

Reaching the Heights

To unveil the serenity of Sattal and Hidimba Parvat, one must first reach Bhimtal or Nainital. Choosing the Bhimtal route makes it quicker to reach the ashram. Both Bhimtal and Nainital are easily accessible because they have good road connections from major cities like Delhi and Dehradun.

Should the rails beckon, the Kathgodam Railway Station, a mere 32 kilometers from Sattal, extends an inviting hand. The proximity of this station ensures a seamless transition to local transport or taxis bound for Sattal or Bhimtal.

Airborne explorers may set their sights on Pantnagar, situated 66 kilometers from Sattal, or Dehradun Airport, 301 kilometers away. Upon touchdown, the route to Sattal, take taxi or bus to Kathgodam, followed by local conveyance to the destination.
