The Mysterious Vasundhara Waterfall Badrinath

In Uttarakhand, a land surrounded by rivers, waterfalls, and sacred places, there exists a special site that draws visitors from far and wide. This is a waterfall that is world-famous for its spiritual significance, mystery, and history. Located about 8 km from Badrinath and 5 km from Mana — India’s last village, this waterfall is known as Vasudhara Falls.

There is a belief associated with this waterfall that its water does not touch sinners. It is said that if a sinful person comes in contact with the waterfall, the flow of water itself stops.

A 400-Foot-High Wonder: Vasudhara Falls Altitude

This special and mysterious waterfall is also mentioned in the scriptures. Falling from a height of around 400 feet,( Vasudhara falls altitude ) the waterfall’s shimmering, pearl-like stream gives visitors a heavenly experience on earth. Moreover, it is believed that the water passes through various medicinal herbs, which is why anyone touched by it becomes free from ailments.

The Two-Hour Vasudhara Falls Trek

The trek to Vasudhara Falls begins from Mana village. After passing the Saraswati Temple, the 5 km trail becomes quite challenging due to its rough and rocky terrain. It takes about two hours to reach Vasudhara from Mana village.

There are no food or water facilities available along the route, so travelers must be prepared. However, horses, mules, and palanquins (dandi-kandi) are available from Mana village to assist pilgrims and tourists in reaching this divine and enchanting waterfall.

According to the Skanda Purana, even a single splash of Vasudhara that touches a person’s body is believed to wash away their sins.

Where is Vasudhara Falls?

Located 8 km from Badrinath and about 5 km from Mana, India’s last village, this waterfall is known as Vasudhara fall. Vasudhara falls altitude is 13,500 feet above sea level and falls from a height of 400 feet. The sound created by the meeting of air and water at such a height fills the heart with excitement and aw.

It is said that the holy waterfall holds within itself many mysteries. The water of this fall plunges from a height of around 400 feet, and its beautiful pearl-like stream gives you the feeling of being in heaven.

The most unique aspect of this waterfall is that its stream does not fall on everyone standing beneath it. Yes, it is believed that those who have committed sins will not be touched by even a single drop of its holy water.

During the Char Dham Yatra, pilgrims visiting Badrinath Dham always make sure to visit Vasudhara. The journey to Vasudhara can be undertaken from May to November.

Vasudhara Falls Story

According to Bhuvan Chandra Uniyal, the religious head of Shri Badrinath Dham, the importance of the Vasudhara waterfall has been described in the Skanda Purana. As per the Skanda Purana, even a single splash of Vasudhara water that touches a person’s body is believed to wash away all sins. Every being desires to visit this sacred place at least once in their life.

It is believed that the Pandavas, along with Draupadi, took this very path on their journey to heaven. At Vasudhara, Sahadeva is said to have left his mortal body, while Arjuna abandoned his Gandiva bow here.

The Ashta Vasus (Aap, Ayaj, Dhruva, Soma, Dhar, Anil, Anal, Pratyush, and Prabhash) are said to have performed intense penance at this location, which is why this waterfall was named Vasundhara Waterfall.

Whenever a divine procession (Dev Yatra) is organized in nearby villages, deities and devotees come to bathe in this sacred Vasudhara.

Mana Village

From Badrinath to Mana village, vehicles are available, but the trek to Vasundhara Waterfall  begins from Mana — India’s last village. This trek is extremely challenging, and travelers or tourists must be physically fit to undertake it.

It takes about two hours to cover the 5 km trek to Vasudhara. The trail passes through the Saraswati Temple, and there are no food or water facilities available along the route.

 Mythology of Vasudhara Falls

According to the scriptures, Sahadeva, one of the five Pandavas, left his mortal body at this place. It is believed that if a drop of water from this waterfall falls on a person, it signifies that the person has performed virtuous deeds in their life. This is why people from India as well as abroad make sure to stand beneath this miraculous waterfall at least once.

It is said that the water of this waterfall possesses the properties of various medicinal herbs. As the water flows down touching several plants and herbs, it becomes enriched with their essence. Therefore, it is believed that whoever is touched by this water is freed from many physical ailments.

It is believed that the Ashta Vasus performed penance at this place, which is why the waterfall was named Vasudhara. This waterfall is so tall that you cannot see the top of the mountain in a single glance. To reach here, you can avail the services of horses, mules, or palanquins (dandi-kandi) from Mana village.
