Uttarkashi – An Eminent Spiritual Town with Adventurous Activities
A sacred spiritual town on the banks of holy river Bhagirathi. Uttarkashi’s literal translation is north Kashi and it is also known as Soumya Kashi. Legends of Vishwanath Temple in Uttarakashi
This divine temple has numerous legends related to it. Lets us first look into the first legend. It is believed when the Kashi temple and town completely submerged in water Lord shiva moves to Uttarakashi during the second half of the Kali-Yuga and makes this place as his abode. Another legend is that during Dwapara Yuga there lived a great sage by name Jada Bharata. He did sever pence here and in this place, many sages did meditation from ancient times. The Holy book and epics describe this place.
Another legend is that Markandeya Maharishi, an adherent devotee of Lord shiva. During the time of death, he prays to lord shiva to save him from the Lord of death. The Vishwanath temple in the Uttarkashi is the place where lord shiva saves Markandeya Maharishi from the god of death.
The main deity is Lord Viswanath who is engrossed in intense meditation in the form of linga. The Shiva Linga is of 56 inches height and tilts towards the south. Inside the sanctum, you can find Goddess Pravthi and Lord Ganesh Mandir and the Markandey Marashi idol in meditation form.
The main deity here is Goddess Parvathi Devi. The main attraction here is the Trishul(Trident) which is 6 m high and at the bottom 90 cm, this Trishul is 1500 years old one.
Adventure places to visit in Uttarkashi
Kalindi pass is between Gangotri valley and Badrinath which is popularly known as one of the highest trekking passes in the world since it is located at an altitude of 5990 m. From here one can clearly see more than 40 Himalayan mountain peaks.

Dayara Brugal is one of the best winter destinations for Skiing and other winter sports. During the winter season, the entire beautiful grass meadows will be covered with snow. Hence this place is located at the altitude from 2600 m to 3500 m. Tourist trek for 9 km into the forest and reach these beautiful meadows.
The holy river Bhagirathi origin place is Gomukh.Therefore from the holy shrine Gangotri it takes 17 km trekking to reach Gomukh.
