Legends of Surkanda Devi Temple
Once Goddess Sati Devi’s father Daksha Prajapathi conducted a Yagna to which the Divine Cosmic Couple was not invited. Even though Lord Shiva warned Devi not to attend the Yagna performed by her father, Devi didn’t listen and went to her maternal Place to attend the holy Yagna performed by her father Daksha Prajapati.
During the Yagna, Daksha insulted the Cosmic being Lord Shiva which made Devi fury. She decided to end her life as she neglected her husband’s words and attended the Yagna. She left her mortal body and with the help of yoga Agni and returned to her abode. Lord Shiva couldn’t bear the loss of his beloved wife. He carried Goddess Sati Devi’s body and started doing Tandavam(dance of destruction), unstoppable which frightened the devas. Hence devas took the shelter of Lord Vishnu to stop Lord Shiva as it was going to cause the annihilation of the universe.
Lord Vishnu released his most powerful weapon in the universe, Sudarshan Chakra to cut Devi’s body into pieces. The body parts fell in different parts of the country which are known as Shakthi Peetas. The face of Sati Devi fell in this place which is Surkanda Devi Temple. Later Lord Shiva went into deep yogic meditation.
