Rural Tourism in Uttarakhand: Explore Top 4 Tourism Villages
This year, Uttarakhand shined brightly in India’s Best Tourism Village contest, with four villages being honored for their excellent sustainable tourism efforts. The award is given to rural places ( Rural Tourism in Uttarakhand ) that do a great job of preserving their cultural heritage, using natural resources responsibly, and involving the local community in their projects.
These villages are recognized for promoting economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Harshil and Gunji were awarded as the Best Vibrant Villages.
In simple terms, the villages are praised for not only bringing in tourists but also keeping their unique traditions and environment safe and real.
A member of the state’s tourism department thanked Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for his vision of making Uttarakhand a top tourism spot. The official shared that his hard work is finally showing positive results in the state’s tourism sector.

Gunji in Pithoragarh and Harshil in Uttarkashi were recognized in the ‘Vibrant Village’ category for their lively local traditions and community-based tourism efforts.
In Jakhol, local young people are actively involved in adventure tourism, with popular treks like Kedarkantha and Gangotri Glacier starting from the village. The community strictly follows environmental rules set by the forest and tourism departments. To protect the environment, the villagers do not use plastic and have formed a waste collection committee to manage garbage along the trekking routes, working together with tourists to keep the area clean.
Harsil village
Harsil village, known for its beautiful scenery and peaceful atmosphere, has been selected in the ‘Vibrant Village’ category for its rich local traditions and focus on community-based tourism. Harshil encourages tourism through treks like Lamatop and Kyarakote, which are organized by the village council.
Gunji village
Gunji village, in Pithoragarh district, also chosen in the ‘Vibrant Village’ category, stands out for its strategic location along the pilgrimage route to Kailash Mansarovar, drawing many pilgrims and adventure seekers.
Supi village
Meanwhile, Supi village in Nainital district has been recognized for its contributions to agricultural tourism. The village invites tourists to experience traditional farming, enjoy local dishes, and immerse themselves in the rural lifestyle. By promoting agricultural tourism, Supi boosts its economy while supporting eco-friendly tourism.
Supi village, situated by the Saryu River, has been recognized for its efforts in promoting agricultural tourism. The village has seven homestays, offering tourists the unique opportunity to engage in farming activities. Recently, Supi has even attracted foreign tourists interested in its rich cultural heritage.
