My Pilgrimage to Mahavatar Babaji’s Cave: Journey to the Cave of the Deathless Guru

Written by Karen Maria Dabrowska

For years, the name Mahavatar Babaji has echoed in my mind, a whisper from ancient Himalayan peaks, a legend woven into the fabric of yoga itself. Babaji, the deathless guru, the ageless master who initiated Lahiri Mahasaya into Kriya Yoga, has always been a figure shrouded in mystery and reverence.

The opportunity to visit the cave where he is said to have spent a significant portion of his earthly existence felt less like a trip and more like a calling. This isn’t just another travel blog; it’s a chronicle of a spiritual quest, a journey to the heart of yogic tradition, and an experience that profoundly altered my understanding of devotion and the eternal.

The Legend of Mahavatar Babaji: An Introduction

Before I delve into the specifics of the journey, let’s briefly touch upon who Mahavatar Babaji is. The term “Mahavatar” signifies a great avatar, one who has transcended the limitations of ordinary human existence. Babaji is believed to have lived for centuries, possibly millennia, maintaining a youthful appearance and possessing complete mastery over the physical body.

His mission, as understood through the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda (author of Autobiography of a Yogi), is to guide humanity’s spiritual evolution. He chose to remain in the physical form, working behind the scenes, inspiring saints and yogis to spread the message of self-realization. He is not readily visible to the ordinary eye, appearing only to those who are spiritually advanced or to those whom he chooses to reveal himself.

Babaji’s most well-known disciple was Lahiri Mahasaya, who he initiated into Kriya Yoga in 1861. This ancient scientific technique accelerates spiritual development, and Babaji instructed Lahiri Mahasaya to disseminate it to sincere seekers. Through Lahiri Mahasaya and his lineage, Kriya Yoga spread throughout India and eventually the world, largely due to the efforts of Paramahansa Yogananda.

The cave near Dwarahat, in the Kumaon region of the Himalayas, is revered as the place where Babaji spent considerable time. It is said to be imbued with his powerful spiritual vibrations, attracting devotees from all corners of the globe. For those on a spiritual path, a visit to this cave is considered a pilgrimage of immense significance.

Preparing for the Pilgrimage: Mind, Body, and Logistics

Embarking on a pilgrimage to a place like Babaji’s Cave requires more than just booking a flight and packing a bag. It demands a certain level of inner preparation. I spent weeks before my trip deepening my meditation practice, focusing on calming the mind and opening my heart.

I also studied the teachings of Yogananda and other Kriya Yoga masters, familiarizing myself with the principles and philosophy that underpin this sacred journey.

Physical Preparation: The trek to the cave is not overly strenuous but does involve some uphill walking at a relatively high altitude. Therefore, physical fitness is essential. I incorporated regular cardio and strength training into my routine to ensure my body was prepared for the demands of the journey.

Logistical Planning: Getting to Dwarahat, the town closest to the cave, requires a bit of planning:

  • Flights: The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport (PGH), but it has limited connectivity. A more reliable option is Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi, followed by an overnight train or a long taxi ride to Kathgodam.
  • Train/Taxi: From Delhi, I took an overnight train to Kathgodam, the gateway to the Kumaon region. From Kathgodam, I hired a taxi to Dwarahat, a journey of about 5-6 hours through winding mountain roads. Alternatively, shared taxis are available, but they can be less comfortable.
  • Accommodation: Dwarahat offers a range of accommodation options, from basic guesthouses to more comfortable hotels. It’s advisable to book in advance, especially during peak season (summer months).
  • Permits: As of my visit, no special permits were required to visit the cave. However, it’s always a good idea to check with local authorities for any updated regulations.
  • Essentials: Warm clothing (even in summer, the mountains can get cold), comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a basic first-aid kit are essential items to pack.
  • Respectful Attire: Dress modestly and respectfully when visiting the cave. Avoid wearing revealing clothing.

The Journey Begins: Reaching Dwarahat

The train journey to Kathgodam was an experience in itself. As the train chugged its way through the Indian countryside, I watched the landscape transform from the bustling cityscapes of Delhi to the serene fields and forests of Uttar Pradesh. The anticipation grew with each passing mile.

Arriving in Kathgodam

Arriving in Kathgodam, I was immediately greeted by the fresh mountain air and the sight of the majestic Himalayas in the distance. The taxi ride to Dwarahat was an adventure, the road snaking its way through lush green valleys, past terraced farms, and alongside gushing rivers. The scenery was breathtaking, a constant reminder of the raw beauty and power of nature.

Dwarahat is a small, sleepy town with a palpable sense of tranquility. The air is clean, the pace is slow, and the people are warm and welcoming. After settling into my guesthouse, I spent the afternoon exploring the town, visiting the ancient temples that dot the landscape, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.

Dwarahat feels like a place where time stands still, a sanctuary far removed from the stresses and anxieties of modern life.

The Trek to the Cave: A Path of Devotion

The following morning, I woke up before dawn, eager to begin the trek to Babaji’s Cave. After a light breakfast, I set off with a local guide, a knowledgeable and friendly man who had been visiting the cave since his childhood.

The trek from Kukuchina village  to the cave is approximately 3 kilometers and takes about 1.5 hours, depending on your pace. The path winds its way through a dense forest of pine and oak trees, the air thick with the scent of earth and greenery. The sound of birdsong filled the air, creating a symphony of nature that accompanied us on our journey.

The initial part of the trek is relatively easy, a gentle ascent through the forest. As we climbed higher, the path became steeper and more challenging. The altitude also started to take its toll, and I found myself pausing frequently to catch my breath. However, the stunning views that unfolded at every turn kept me motivated.

Along the way, we passed small shrines and temples, each adorned with colorful flags and offerings. My guide shared stories about the local deities and the significance of these sacred places. The atmosphere was charged with a sense of devotion, a feeling that permeated every aspect of the journey.

As we neared the cave, I could feel a palpable shift in the energy. The air seemed to grow thicker, the silence deeper. A sense of anticipation washed over me, a feeling that I was approaching something truly special.

The Cave of Mahavatar Babaji: An Encounter with the Divine

Finally, after hours of trekking, we arrived at the cave. It’s a small, unassuming opening in the side of a hill, marked by a simple sign. There’s no grand architecture or elaborate ornamentation, just a humble cave that exudes an aura of profound peace and power.

Removing my shoes, I stepped inside. The cave is small, barely large enough to accommodate a few people. A simple stone platform serves as an altar, adorned with flowers, incense, and photographs of Babaji and other Kriya Yoga masters. The air is cool and still, heavy with the scent of incense and the echoes of countless prayers.

I sat down on the floor, closed my eyes, and began to meditate. As I focused on my breath, I felt a deep sense of calm wash over me. The thoughts that usually cluttered my mind began to dissipate, replaced by a profound stillness.

It’s difficult to describe the experience in words. The cave seemed to vibrate with a subtle energy, a palpable presence that filled the space. I felt a connection to something larger than myself, a sense of belonging to the vast tapestry of existence.

I spent several hours in the cave, meditating, praying, and simply being present. I didn’t have any dramatic visions or earth-shattering revelations, but I experienced a deep sense of peace and clarity that I had never felt before. It was as if the veil between the physical and the spiritual had thinned, allowing me to glimpse a deeper reality.

Leaving the cave, I felt transformed. The world seemed brighter, more vibrant. My heart was filled with gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose. The pilgrimage to Babaji’s Cave had been more than just a trip; it had been a profound spiritual experience that had touched me at the deepest level.
