Insightful road trip of Mahavatar Babaji Cave from Haridwar
Visiting Mahavatar Babaji Cave from Haridwar is not just a journey—it is a sacred pilgrimage that touches the soul. I have been blessed to visit Mahavatar Babaji’s Cave in Kukuchina, Dunagiri, Dwarahat range of Uttarakhand multiple times. Each visit deepens the inner silence and devotion, especially for those who follow the path of Kriya Yoga.
Sitting inside the cave where Mahavatar Babaji initiated Lahiri Mahasaya into the sacred science of Kriya Yoga is an experience beyond words. After reading Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda, this pilgrimage felt divinely guided and spiritually complete.
Mahavatar Babaji Cave from Rishikesh – A Must for Every Kriyaban
If you are a Kriyaban (Kriya Yoga practitioner), visiting Babaji’s Cave at least once in your lifetime feels like a spiritual calling. Many devotees consciously follow the travel footsteps of Paramahansa Yogananda, who himself journeyed through this sacred Himalayan route.

Our Road Journey: Mahavatar Babaji Cave from Haridwar
Day 1: Departure from Tapovan, Rishikesh
We began our pilgrimage for Mahavatar Babaji Cave from Haridwar at 7:30 PM from Tapovan, where I live. My companion on this journey was Mr. Prem Prakash Singh.
-
Shared auto from Tapovan to Rishikesh bus stand (25 minutes)
-
Public bus from Rishikesh to Haridwar (45 minutes)
-
Night sleeper train from Haridwar to Kathgodam at 12:15 AM
Waiting for the night train felt like a pause before entering a deeper spiritual zone.
Day 2: Kathgodam to Ranikhet to Dwarahat
We arrived at Kathgodam Railway Station around 7:00 AM. This is the nearest railway station to Mahavatar Babaji Cave.
-
Shared taxi from Kathgodam to Ranikhet (approx. 4 hours)
-
Roads were zig-zag, taxis cramped, and old jeeps packed
-
Some co-passengers felt motion sickness, but the Kumaon mountain views were breathtaking
From Ranikhet, we took another shared taxi to Dwarahat (1–2 hours).
Despite the discomfort, memories of my first visit to Ranikhet in 1995 resurfaced, filling me with joy and gratitude.

Stay at Yogoda Satsanga Sakha Ashram (YSS), Dwarahat
We finally reached Yogoda Satsanga Sakha Ashram (YSS), Dwarahat, a sacred place dedicated to followers of Paramahansa Yogananda.

The Next Day: Journey to Kukuchina
We traveled with four other Kriyabans. The YSS Ashram kindly arranged:
-
A shared taxi to Kukuchina village
-
A basket of packed lunch
The drive took about 50 minutes, though the constant honking on empty mountain roads felt unsettling.
Trek from Kukuchina to Mahavatar Babaji Cave
From Kukuchina, we began the 50-minute uphill walk to the cave. The trail is scenic, peaceful, and moderately steep.
Babaji’s Shrine
Before reaching the cave, we encountered Babaji’s Shrine, built by the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) at the site where Babaji once manifested a golden palace for Lahiri Mahasaya.
Inside Mahavatar Babaji’s Cave
Many devotees visit daily—Kriya Yogis from various lineages, all connected through Lahiri Mahasaya.
-
Shoes must be removed before entering
-
We found quiet spots inside and meditated for nearly one hour
-
The silence inside the cave is profoundly alive
It is not a place of excitement—but of deep stillness and inner communion.
After the Cave – Pandavkholi Visit
After our meditation:
-
We followed a trail uphill to Pandavkholi Cave & Temple
-
Visited Pandavkholi Dharamshala
