Ghangaria village: Gateway to the Valley of Flowers

Ghangaria is a small village located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is a popular gateway for those wishing to explore the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib.

Ghangaria altitude is approx.  3,049 meters,  is surrounded by beautiful mountains and is an ideal base camp for trekkers.

Starting from Govindghat, you will trek about 13 kilometers to reach the village of Ghangaria. From Ghangaria to valley of flowers, it’s a 4-kilometer hike to reach the entrance point Valley of Flowers and then 1 km more to roam inside. You can also visit Hemkund Sahib, a Sikh pilgrimage site near Ghangaria.

Best Time to visit Ghangaria village

  • The best time to visit Ghangaria  is between July and September when the Valley of Flowers is in full bloom.
  • During this time, the valley is covered in a blanket of vibrant flowers, and the air is filled with their fragrance.
  • The weather is also pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C during the day.

How to Reach

To reach Ghangaria village, you first need to get to the town of Govindghat. Govindghat is well-connected by road and is around 275 km from the city of Dehradun.

From Govindghat, you can either trek for 13 km to Ghangaria village or take a helicopter ride. The helicopter ride takes around 10-15 minutes, while the trek can take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours depending on your fitness level.

Ghangaria Accommodation

Once you reach Ghangaria village , you can set up base in one of the many lodges and guesthouses available in the village. There are also several restaurants serving local food, so you don’t have to worry about going hungry. However, be prepared for basic amenities as the village is located at a high altitude and is relatively isolated.

Valley of  Flowers

  • The Valley of Flowers is a short 3 km trek from Ghangaria vilalge, and the trail is well-marked and easy to follow. It is a moderate trek, and you will need to carry water and snacks with you.
  • The valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to over 500 species of flowers, including the Himalayan blue poppy, Himalayan bellflower, and Himalayan cobra lily.
  • The valley is also home to several rare and endangered species of animals, including the Asiatic black bear, brown bear, and snow leopard.

Hemkund Sahib

  • Another popular trek from Ghangaria village to  Hemkund Sahib trek. Hemkund Sahib is a Sikh shrine and is located at an altitude of 4,329 meters. The trek is steep and strenuous, but the views of the surrounding mountains are breathtaking.
  • The shrine is open from May to October, and during this time, you can witness the beautiful Hemkund Lake and the Gurudwara.
