Gangotri to Gaumukh

• Gangotri to Gaumukh, which is about 19 km away. However, it got damaged in the 2013 floods due to rockslides, making it narrow and rough.
• Around 9 km ahead of Gangotri, you’ll find Chirbasa, where Chir trees grow. After 4 km from Chirbasa, there’s a dangerous place called Gila Pahar known for landslides.

Bhojbasa to Gaumukh

The trek becomes more challenging after Bhojbasa, with steep sections and boulders to navigate. The trail starts behind the GMVN rest house and is well-marked. Ensure you fill your water bottle before starting, as drinkable water is scarce beyond Bhojbasa.

After about a kilometer, you will see Shivling Peak, the Bhagirathi peaks, and Gangotri Glacier. Pause to enjoy the view. The trek continues to be tough, with numerous boulders, so walk carefully to avoid injuries.

Just 1 km from Gila Pahar is Bhojbasa, the only place to stay overnight on the way to Tapovan and Nandanvan. From Bhojbasa, it’s a 5 km trek to reach Gomukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier. On this trek, you’ll get a majestic view of Mt. Shivling just before reaching Gomukh.

The route after Bhojwasa can be difficult, with a boulder zone to cross to get to Gomukh from Gangotri. To reach Bhojwasa, you can either trek or take a horse from Gangotri Temple. However, from Bhojbasa, only trekking is allowed to reach the site.
