At Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, the Ganga Aarti is performed at 11 different places. In addition, the main Ganga Aarti is conducted at the Brahmakund Ghat.

Before participating in the Ganga Aarti, devotees sip a few drops of Ganga water as a form of purification ritual (Aachman). The Ganga Aarti held at Har Ki Pauri lasts for about one hour.

At the Brahmakund Ghat, the Ganga Aarti is performed by 11 priests. Before the Aarti, the priests perform the ceremonial bathing (Abhishek) of Maa Ganga, after which the Aarti officially begins.

The Ganga Aarti is a religious ceremony that takes place twice a day at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar. Throughout the year, there is a huge crowd of devotees and tourists who come to witness it.

  1. The timing of the Ganga Aarti is decided according to the sunrise and sunset. From March to October, the morning Aarti is held between 5:00 AM and 6:30 AM, while the evening Aarti takes place between 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM.
  2. During the winter season, the morning Aarti is held between 6:30 AM and 7:00 AM, and the evening Aarti between 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM.
  3. It is said that depending on the season, a crowd of 3,000 to 30,000 people gathers here in the evening for the Ganga Aarti. On special festivals, this crowd can reach up to one lakh (100,000) people.
  4. The Ganga Aarti begins with bringing the idol of Goddess Ganga to the ghat in a palanquin. After this, priests chant mantras in Sanskrit, and offer Panchamrit (a sacred mixture of five ingredients) to Maa Ganga.
  5. During this time, the poem “Ganga Lahari”, written by Pandit Jagannath, is also recited. After that, offerings (Dakshina) are collected from the devotees present at the ghat.
  6. Then, the Ganga Aarti starts, which lasts for about five minutes. The evening Aarti attracts a larger crowd than the morning one.
  7. If you wish to witness this divine spectacle, it is better to arrive about 45 minutes early in the morning and around 75 minutes before the evening Aarti.
  8. You will need to bargain well with auto and rickshaw drivers to reach here and also take care of your belongings.
  9. If possible, try to watch the Ganga Aarti from the steps near the Clock Tower and Ganga Temple — the view from there is truly mesmerizing.
