School closures used to signify playtime or aimless wandering for children like Jyoti. However, now she’s engrossed in reading thanks to this inventive concept. Jyoti’s transformation mirrors that of numerous children across Uttarakhand’s remote villages.

Behind this visionary concept stands Himmotthan, a social organization that embarked on a mission to cultivate a book culture and empower education in Uttarakhand’s challenging environment. Their initiative, which started in October 2022, has already reached 650 primary schools across four districts. Their focus extends beyond conventional learning – they emphasize basic literacy, physical education, and the empowerment of school management committees.

Shubham Badhani, a project associate at Himmotthan, explains the inspiration behind the Horse Library. In mountainous villages where daily amenities are scarce and connectivity is a luxury, establishing a traditional educational atmosphere is an uphill task.

This challenge birthed the idea of a mobile library, where educational motivators carry books on cycles and bicycles to remote areas. But when June’s unrelenting rain halted even these journeys, villagers rallied to keep education alive by providing horses. The Horse Library now rides on the backs of these gentle creatures, traversing the challenging terrains to bring the world of books to children who need it most.

The impact is profound. Subhash Chandra Badhani, an educational motivator, shares stories of engaged young minds in villages like Salva, Basi, Chara, and more. The Horse Library not only imparts knowledge but also kindles excitement through color activities and captivating stories. Children’s interest in learning has surged remarkably within just two months.

Kavita Rawat, a student herself, doubles as an educational motivator. She oversees villages where the Horse Library reignites the joy of learning. What’s intriguing is that the books are not the typical course materials, but engaging literature that captivates children’s imagination. The model includes bi-weekly sessions, providing time for children to absorb and explore beyond the class.

The responses have been overwhelmingly positive. Nagendra Barthwal, the Nainital District Education Officer, lauds this endeavor as commendable, bridging gaps where government resources might fall short. Kamla Negi, a village head, attests to the transformation she witnesses – children, once distant from education due to geographical challenges, are now engrossed in learning, thanks to the Horse Library.
