Lekhak Gaon, also known as the Writer’s Village, is a unique project in India located in the peaceful Thano region, just 24 km from Dehradun. Launched in October 2024, this 25-acre sanctuary is designed to support writers, artists, and thinkers by offering a calm and creative space.
It’s the first destination of its kind in India, focused on encouraging intellectual and artistic growth. Lekhak Gaon is a beautiful mix of India’s cultural heritage and modern creativity, making it an ideal place for those who want to create, reflect, and connect in a serene Himalayan setting.
An Author’s Vision Realised
Lekhak Gaon is the result of a powerful dream by renowned author and former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’. He imagined a peaceful place where writers and artists could come together, share ideas, and create freely.
The idea was inspired by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who once expressed concern over the lack of dedicated spaces for writers in India. Even today, writers often struggle with low recognition and limited support for their craft.
This vision finally came to life when former President Ram Nath Kovind, along with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Uttarakhand Governor Lt Gen Gurmeet Singh (Retd), officially inaugurated Lekhak Gaon—marking a significant moment in India’s cultural journey.
Writer’s Village Gone Global
Lekhak Gaon isn’t just a peaceful retreat—it’s becoming a global hub for art and literature. Each year, over 300 writers, artists, and thinkers from 65 countries visit the village to take part in the International Literature, Art, and Culture Festival. This five-day event celebrates the power of storytelling, creativity, and cross-cultural dialogue.
Cultural Heritage
Along with promoting creativity, Lekhak Gaon plays a big role in preserving India’s cultural roots. The museum and library are dedicated to showcasing the rich literary and artistic traditions of Uttarakhand and India. Initiatives like the Sparsh Himalaya Abhiyan help protect the intangible heritage of the Himalayas and promote the Himalayan way of life.

Rammaan Bhavan

The auditorium at Lekhak Gaon, known as Rammaan Bhavan, is a grand hall equipped with modern facilities.

Nalanda Bhavan

Each cottage is named after a prominent poet or writer, such as Adi Kavi Kalidas Cottage, Poet Sumitranandan Pant Cottage, Poet Rabindranath Tagore Cottage, Poet Chandrkunwar Cottage, and Shiv Prasad Dabral Cottage, among others. Sunder Lal Bahuguna

An Environmental Path is being developed throughout the Lekhak Gaon campus. Visitors to the village will take leisurely walks along this path during the morning and evening, connecting them with the essence of nature and the environment.
