After Death of Veerappan

Two decades after the death of sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, the Forest Department is focusing on turning the lush forests into a major tourist attraction. Soon, they will launch a forest safari starting from Hogenakkal Falls, located on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border.

A similar safari, already operating from Gopinatham, Veerappan’s native village, has gained huge popularity among visitors, offering a unique experience of ‘brigand tourism’.

Hogenakkal Safari Distance

The new Hogenakkal safari will cover a 22-kilometre stretch through the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, passing through Veerappan’s famous hideouts. This area is rich in wildlife, including elephants, sambar deer, bears, and other species, making it an exciting destination for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Authorities at the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary chose Hogenakkal as the starting point for the safari because it’s a popular tourist spot, known for boating on the River Cauvery and its delicious traditional fish dishes.

4  Hogenakkal safari trips daily

The Forest Department plans to operate four  Hogenakkal safari trips daily—two in the morning and two in the evening—with a capacity of 25 people across two vehicles. They are also acquiring new safari vehicles designed to venture deeper into the forest.

For accommodation, the department has introduced tent cottages in Gopinatham, and the rise in tourism has encouraged local villagers to offer home stays and rooms for rent, adding to the region’s charm and hospitality.

Male Mahadeshwara Hills (MM Hills): A Sacred Pilgrimage Spot

Male Mahadeshwara Hills, located in Hanur taluk at an elevation of 3,200 feet, is one of Karnataka’s most revered pilgrimage centers. The hill range, known as ‘Elu Male’ or seven hills, comprises Anemale, Jenumale, Kadumale, Kanumale, Ponnachimale, Pavalamale, and Pachchemale.

The Temple and Its Significance

The ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, with the deity in the form of a linga, is a major attraction for Shaiva devotees. According to history, Saint Mahadeshwara, a Veerashaiva saint of the 14th–15th centuries, meditated and attained salvation on these hills. The temple was built to honor his legacy, attracting devotees from across South India.

The temple complex also features a large Nandi statue, surrounded by several smaller shrines. Male Mahadeshwara Hills Temple is especially crowded during festivals like Shivarathri, Ugadi, Gauri Festival, Mahalaya Amavasye, and Deepavali, with over a lakh of devotees participating in the grand Car Festival. The site is celebrated in Kannada folk songs, adding to its cultural and spiritual allure.
