Step-by-Step Guide to Swargarohini Trek from Badrinath, 2025

If you want to experience heaven on earth, head towards Swargarohini Trek Badrinath Dham. It is believed that Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava, along with Swan, ascended to Vaikuntha from Swargarohini.

Truly, the beauty of this place is astonishing. Once you set foot here, you don’t feel like leaving. This is why, especially during the pleasant weather these days, the enthusiasm of travelers reaching Swargarohini peak is truly visible.

Badrinath to Swargarohini Distance

To reach Swargarohini, devotees must trek 30 km on foot from Badrinath Dham across Narayan Parvat. Since most of the route is covered with glaciers, the journey usually takes three days. Along the way, travelers can witness immense natural beauty — from cascading waterfalls to vast Bugyals (lush alpine meadows) that mesmerize both pilgrims and nature lovers.

The journey to Swargarohini is extremely challenging. From Badrinath Dham, the first 10 km leads to Laxmi Van, followed by another 10 km to Chakratirth, and then 6 km further to Satopanth.

From Satopanth, a steep 4 km climb brings travelers to the Swargarohini viewpoint. In ancient times, travelers used to rest overnight in caves along these stages, but today most carry tents.

Pandavas and Swargarohini Steps

During their heavenly ascent, the Pandavas are believed to have bathed in Satopanth Lake, situated at an altitude of 14,300 feet. This gives the lake special significance for Hindus, and it is believed that on Ekadashi, Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh themselves come to bathe here.

One can reach Swargarohini by a 30 km trek on Narayan Parvat from Badrinath Dham. This region remains covered in snow throughout the year. Since most of the route is filled with glaciers, the journey usually takes three days.

Nature has spread its beauty generously here — waterfalls at some places and vast Bugyals (lush grassy meadows) at others captivate travelers and nature lovers.

The snow-covered mountains all around impart a sense of immense peace, while hundreds of colorful flower species greet travelers wherever they look.

It is said that after renouncing their kingdom, the five Pandava brothers, along with Draupadi, ascended to heaven via this path. Bheem, Arjuna, Nakul, Sahadeva, and Draupadi attained death even before reaching Swargarohini.

However, Yudhishthira, accompanied by a swan, departed to heaven alive in a Pushpak Vimana. This belief has increased the significance of Swargarohini.

These days, due to clear weather, there is continuous movement of travelers here. After darshan of Lord Badrinath, a large number of pilgrims are making their way to Swargarohini.

According to Bhuvan Chandra Uniyal, the religious head of Badrinath Dham, the journey to Swargarohini is arduous, yet its divine charm continues to attract travelers.

Swargarohini Trek– Detailed Itinerary

Hukum Singh , a trekker from Mana village, explains that the name Swargarohini itself speaks volumes, and the beauty of the trail truly gives the feeling of entering the gates of heaven. He also mentions that for travelers coming from Haridwar, the trek takes 7 days. The itinerary is as follows:

  • Day 1: Travelers reach Badrinath from Haridwar.

  • Day 2: Trek to Laxmi Van.

  • Day 3: Trek to Chakratirth.

  • Day 4: Trek to Satopanth.

  • Day 5: Reach Swargarohini.

  • Day 6: Return to Badrinath.

  • Day 7: Return to Haridwar.

Permission from Authorities is Mandatory

To visit Swargarohini, permission from the Joshimath Tehsil administration is mandatory. Additionally, one must also obtain permission from the Forest Department, as this region falls under the Nanda Devi National Park.

The Forest Department charges ₹150 per traveler for visiting Swargarohini. Porters and guides must be arranged by the travelers themselves.

Pilgrims Circumnavigate the Lake

At Swargarohini, there is a vast lake with a diameter of 3 km. Pilgrims make sure to circumnavigate this lake upon reaching the site. It is believed that circumnavigating the lake brings spiritual merit.

Travelers Pass Through Three Key Stages

The journey to Swargarohini is extremely challenging. From Badrinath Dham, travelers first reach Laxmi Van (a dense forest of Bo tree leaves) after 10 km, then Chakratirth another 10 km ahead, and finally Satopanth 6 km further.

From there, a steep 4 km climb leads to Swargarohini. In ancient times, travelers used to rest overnight in caves along these stages. Today, pilgrims usually carry tents for camping.
