Bhimtal

Bhimtal is a picturesque lake city in Uttarakhand, India that derives its name from the mythological character Bhima of the Mahabharata. Bhimtal is situated at an altitude of 1,370 meters and is gaining traction as a tourist destination due to its close proximity to Nainital and the presence of stately hotels that offer cheaper lodging options in comparison to Nainital.

Bhimtal lake is located in a picturesque spot with a small island in the center that houses a beautiful large aquarium. This used to be a restaurant but is now an attraction for tourists. Bhimtal offers stunning views of nature’s beauty and is perfect to visit any time of year. Bhimtal is also conveniently located and can be easily reached by road.

History

Bhimtal was under British rule after the Anglo-Nepalese War, also known as the Gorkha War of 1814-1816. The pedestrian roads are still in use and are connected to Kathgodam. They also connect to different regions of Kumaon, Nepal, and Tibet. It is speculated that the connecting routes might be a part of the ancient silk route.

Mythology

The city of Bhimtal gets its name from the mythological character Bhima from the Mahabharata. It’s believed that the city’s famous lake was once known as the Bhimasarovar lake, which was the Pandavas’ stomping ground. According to Hindu legend, Bhima and his brothers visited this place during their exile.
