Barkot is a hill town located on the banks of the Yamuna River in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Situated at an elevation of 1220 m above sea level, Barkot is one of the popular places for tourism in Uttarakhand state. One can get a jeep for Jankichatti from Barkot. Jankichatti is around 45kms from Barkot and it takes around 1.30 hrs to reach there.

Lakhamandal is a super cool place located about 100 km from Chakrata! It’s really special because it has a lot of historical and mythological significance in India. According to legends, in the famous Hindu epic Mahabharata, this is where Duryodhan tried to be really sneaky and kill the Pandavas. He did this by making them stay in a palace called the Laksha Grah, which was made of wax!

When you go to Lakhamandal, right outside the main shrine, you can see two amazing well-carved statues. People say these statues are of Arjun and Bheem, or some believe they represent Danav (the evil one) and Manav (the good one), or even two doormen! There are also inscriptions in the temple that are super old, dating back to the 8th to 15th century of the Gupta period.

Location & How to Reach Lakhamandal

Lakhamandal is on the Mussoorie road, which is 100 km away from Chakrata. If you want to visit, you can take a bus or hire a taxi from Chakrata. The nearest railway station to get to Lakhamandal is Dehradun Railway Station, which is about 107 km away, and the closest airport is at Jolly Grant Airport, around 130 km away. It’s a fun adventure to get there!

Barkot to Janki Chatti

If you want to travel from Barkot to Janki Chatti, you’ll have to travel 44 KM there or 44 KM back. If you’re traveling in a car, that’s about an hour’s drive. If you’re on a bike, plan to be on the road for a little less than one hour. If you’re walking, expect to be on the road for three hours and 15 minutes. You could also choose to ride a bus from Barkot to Janki Chatti.

Surya Kund Yamunotri

Surya Kund, a significant thermal spring near the Yamunotri temple, is named after the Yamuna River, considered the daughter of Surya. Bordered by snow-capped peaks, this spring has divine significance. With a temperature around 88°C, pilgrims use it to prepare Prasad by boiling potatoes or rice tied in cloth. This Prasad is then offered to the temple deity, and the remainder is taken home by the devotees.

How to Travel

Yamunotri temple is situated 13 kilometers away from Hanuman Chatti and 6 kilometers if you’re opting to walk from Janki Chatti. Ponies, horses, or palanquins can be rented to help you get to Yamunotri temple if the thought of walking sounds too daunting.

Travel Route 

If you’re driving from , the motorable road will take you to Jankichatti via Syanachatti, Ranachatti, and Hanumanchatti – which is 50 kilometers in total if you’re coming from Barkot.

From Jankichatti it’s only a 5-kilometer trek to Yamunotri temple but if you’re not feeling up for the walk, again, ponies and dandies are available for rent as well as Kandies (baskets) for carrying children.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Barkot is between the months of April and October. Snowfall during winter changes this picturesque hamlet into a heavenly paradise.
