Rishikesh: A Blend of Pilgrimage and Adventure

Known worldwide as the Yoga Capital of the World, Rishikesh is a peaceful retreat for those seeking tranquility away from the fast pace of modern life. Located in the state of Uttarakhand, about 25 kilometers from Haridwar, this charming town perfectly embodies the essence of faith and Hindu spirituality like few other places in India.

Nestled on the banks of the sacred Ganges River and at the foothills of the majestic Himalayas, Rishikesh draws visitors throughout the year. Not only is it one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in the country, but it is also a hotspot for thrill-seekers. The mighty Ganges River provides the perfect setting for river rafting and kayaking, while the surrounding areas are ideal for mountaineering, cliff jumping, hiking, trekking, and bungee jumping.

Rishikesh’s origins are steeped in mythology, with its roots tied to the ancient Kedarkhand (the Garhwal region). According to legend, Lord Rama performed penance here after defeating Ravana, and as a result, Lord Vishnu appeared to him in the form of Hrishikesh (one of Vishnu’s epithets). The town’s name, Rishikesh, is derived from this sacred occurrence.

The Skanda Purana’s Kedar Khand also mentions Indrakund, an ancient site located in Rishikesh. Moreover, the iconic Lakshman Jhula is believed to be the very place where Lakshman, the brother of Lord Rama, crossed the Ganges using a jute rope. The present-day iron suspension bridge, constructed in 1929, replaced an older version destroyed by floods.
