Sri Ramakrishna Kutir, established in Almora in 1916 by Swami Turiyananda, fulfills Swami Vivekananda’s dream of an ashram where nature aids meditation effortlessly. Despite its brief history, the ashram remains a haven for spiritual practice.

It lies at Bright End Corner, it offers a serene environment conducive to introspection. Though Swami Turiyananda’s time here was short-lived due to declining health, the ashram continues to embody his vision of natural meditation. Nature itself supports the inward journey of the meditator, making it a tranquil retreat in the Himalayas.

Swami Vivekananda

In one of his lectures in Almora, Swami Vivekananda expressed his deep longing to establish an Ashrama amidst the tranquil peaks of the Himalayas. He envisioned it as a center of calmness, meditation, and peace, resonating with the spiritual heritage of the region.

To fulfill this vision, his brother disciples, Swami Shivananda and Swami Turiyananda, established Sri Ramakrishna Kutir in 1916. Serving as a spiritual and retreat center for monastics of the Ramakrishna Order from India and abroad, the ashrama also welcomes devotees and guests seeking solitude for their spiritual growth in its serene and spiritual ambiance.

Swami Turiyananda

Swami Turiyananda (1863-1922), born as Harinath Chattopadhyay in Kolkata, led an austere life from childhood. He encountered Sri Ramakrishna in his early teens and joined the Ramakrishna Ashram in 1887. Traveling extensively across India and abroad, he taught Vedanta. In 1899, he founded the Shanti Ashram in Northern California. Returning to India in 1902, he established Sri Ramakrishna Kutir in Almora on May 22, 1916.

Activities conducted by the Ashram are;

    • Organizing religious events such as daily worship, spiritual talks, and commemorating significant religious festivals and the birthdays of revered figures.
    • Engaging in welfare activities such as constructing housing, offering medical and educational assistance, providing essential supplies like ration kits and winter clothing.
