Triveni Ghat: The Heart of Rishikesh

Triveni Ghat of Rishikesh is called the heart of the pilgrimage town. Situated on the bank of the Ganges, Triveni Ghat is the largest ghat of the pilgrimage town. Triveni Ghat is believed to be the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.

Near the Triveni Ghat, the stream of Yamuna reaches the Ganges from the nearby Rishi Kund, while the stream of Saraswati merges directly into the Ganges here. This is clearly mentioned in ancient scriptures. Taking a bath in the Ganges here is considered especially significant.

Spiritually important place Triveni Ghat at every day in the evening happening musical Ganga Aarti is the center of attraction. To see the Ganga Aarti, a large number of devotees gather here.

At Triveni Ghat, in Lord Shiva’s matted hair (Jata), the descent of Ganga, during the Mahabharata war Lord Shri Krishna giving teachings of Gita to Arjun, and the attractive tableau of Mother Ganga are also seen.

Chaurasi Kutiya: An Example of Architecture

On the left bank of the Ganges, adjoining Swargashram within the boundary of Rajaji Tiger Reserve, is located Chaurasi Kutiya. Chaurasi Kutiya is also known as Shankaracharya Nagar and Beatles Ashram. This ashram was established by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the proponent of transcendental meditation yoga.

In 1968, four members of the famous Western band, The Beatles, came to this ashram. They composed many memorable songs and music here. Even today, a large number of tourists from abroad come to see this place associated with the memories of The Beatles.

In Chaurasi Kutiya, 84 dome-shaped huts were built for yoga and meditation, which still exist here.

However, due to being closed for a long time, most of the buildings have deteriorated. But as an amazing example of architecture, this structure remains relevant today. The ashram complex has a temple, library, kitchen, Maharishi Yogi’s house, and huts, the walls of which have colorful murals.

Chaurasi Kutiya is also a suitable place for nature trails and bird watching. For entry here, foreign tourists have to pay 1200 rupees, Indian tourists 150 rupees, senior citizens 75 rupees, and students 40 rupees.

Swargashram to see the sky-touching temples

The area on the left side of the Ganges in Rishikesh is famous as Swargashram-Lakshman Jhula. This area is famous for monasteries, temples, ashrams, many small and big hotels, and restaurants.

Here, famous Parmarth Niketan, Geeta Bhavan, Vanprasth Ashram, Geeta Ashram, as well as the multi-storied 13-floor, 14-floor, and multi-storied Bhootnath temple are located. The 13-floor temple is also known as Triyambakeshwar temple.

This temple situated on the banks of the Ganges river is an attractive and beautiful example of 13-floor architecture. About 2 kilometers from here is Bhootnath temple.

It is believed that Lord Shiva’s wedding procession had stayed here. In the courtyard of this temple, there is a Shiva Lingam, around which bells are hung. The special thing is that each bell produces different sound.

River Rafting and Camping

• In the pilgrimage city Rishikesh, the area from Kaudiyala to Munikireti on the Ganges is an eco-tourism zone. Here, besides river rafting and camping, many adventure activities are conducted.

Waterfalls  that touch Your Heart

On the route from Rishikesh to Badrinath, about 3 kilometers ahead of Tapovan, there is a beautiful cold-water waterfall (springs). This water stream flows through rocky terrain forming many small and big waterfalls amidst forests.
To reach this waterfall, about one kilometer distance has to be covered from the main road. Here, several waterfalls can also be seen in between. Below the main waterfall, there is a beautiful pond for bathing and a wooden bridge to reach its other side.

Here you can see beautiful plants and animals all around. Besides this, on the Neelkanth route, Garudchatti and Patna waterfalls are also worth seeing. Around the Patna waterfall, which falls from a height of about one and a half hundred feet, water droplets can be seen dropping like drizzle from umbrella-shaped rocks.

To reach here, about two and a half kilometers of steep climb has to be crossed. But surely, reaching this waterfall makes all tiredness vanish. Patna and Garud Chatti waterfalls lie within Rajaji Park’s boundary, where currently no fee is charged for tourists. However, a nominal fee of 20 rupees has to be paid to visit Neer waterfall.

See the Himalayas from Kunjapuri Temple

On the Rishikesh-Gangotri route, about 32 km ahead of Rishikesh, at an altitude of 1645 meters above sea level, is situated the Kunjapuri Temple. From this temple, you can see the peaks of the Himalayas to the north and the scenic views of Rishikesh, Haridwar, and the Doon Valley to the south.

There is also a magnificent trekking route through the forest from Tapovan in Rishikesh to Kunjapuri Temple; if you enjoy trekking, this route can be better for you. Being a main religious site, a large number of devotees visit here throughout the year, especially during Navratri.

• Its distance from Rishikesh is about 22 kilometers. It is believed that this cave is more than 3000 years old.
• Even today, many sages and saints are found resting and meditating around this cave. It is also believed that this place was the residence of Lord Rama’s family guru Sage Vashishta.
• Upon entering inside the cave, one can also see a Shiva Lingam. It is said that in ancient times this cave extended even further, but now due to geological changes, this cave is closed.
• On the path connecting here to Pavaki Devi, there is also a Loyal Cave containing many mysteries. In this cave, many figures are formed naturally from calcium and carbon stone formations.
• Inside the cave, figures of Lord Ganesha, Shiva, an elephant, a jellyfish, snakes, and Nagas are formed. A similar cave is famous by the name Jhilmil Cave on the walking path to Neelkanth Temple.
• In this cave, there is a hollow part towards the sky through which sun rays enter inside the cave. The special thing is that no fee has to be paid for visiting these places.
• From Ram Jhula, also you can visit Tat Wale Baba cave and Mauni Baba cave behind Swarg Ashram and Beatles Ashram.
