Discover Kharsali Uttarakhand : Temple and Weather Guide 2026

Kharsali is a serene Himalayan village located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Situated 1 km from Janki Chatti, 9 km from Hanuman Chatti, and about 6 km from the sacred Yamunotri Temple, Kharsali sits at an altitude of 2,675 meters above sea level.

This peaceful village is famously known as the winter seat of Goddess Yamuna, where the deity is worshipped when the Yamunotri shrine remains closed due to heavy snowfall.

Kharsali Temple – Winter Seat of Goddess Yamuna

The most important Kharsali temple is the ancient Yamuna temple, believed to have been built by the Pandavas. This three-storied wooden temple has survived centuries of harsh weather and natural calamities.

  • Houses the idol of Goddess Yamuna during winter months

  • The deity is shifted here on Bhai Dooj after Diwali

  • Bronze idol of Lord Shani Dev is also worshipped

  • Unique sacred urns inside the temple are believed to change position on Purnima and Amavasya

An ancient Someshwar (Shiva) Temple is also located within the village, adding to Kharsali’s spiritual depth.
