Discover the Kanatal from Dehradun: Places To Visit, Things To Do

Kanatal is a small, pretty hill station in Uttarakhand where you can enjoy nature and feel free from city life. It has apple orchards, kind people, and twisty roads going through pine, deodar, and rhododendron forests. You can walk in the forest trails, eat by streams, and even see mountain goats on soft green grass. The best time to visit Kanatal from Dehradun,  is from April to October, but in winter, it becomes a snowy wonderland. Kanatal is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the mountains in any season.

Surkanda Devi Temple Kanatal from Dehradun

Surkanda Devi Temple in Kanatal is a special and holy place. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where, as per myths, parts of Goddess Sati’s body fell. This temple is high up at 2,756 meters and surrounded by thick forests.

From here, you can see the Himalayas in the north and places like Dehradun and Rishikesh in the south. Many people visit during the Ganga Dussehra festival in May and June. You can take a ropeway to the temple, but walking up is also a great way to enjoy the beautiful view!

Tehri Lake

Tehri Lake is a big, beautiful lake made by the Tehri Dam on the Bhagirathi River. It’s a fun place where people go for boating to relax and enjoy the calm water. If you love adventure, you can try jet skiing, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), river rafting, or even banana boat rides. It’s perfect for both relaxing and having lots of fun!

Kodia Forest

Kodia Forest is a quiet and lovely place, perfect for a picnic. It has beautiful views, natural springs, and lots of chances to see birds and take amazing nature photos. You can also go on a jeep safari from Kanatal to explore the forest (with permission). On the way, you might see animals like musk deer, barking deer, wild boars, and gorals. It’s a great spot for both fun and adventure!

Camping

  • Camping in Kanatal is an amazing way to enjoy the starry night sky. Surrounded by oak, pine, and deodar trees, it’s perfect for people from cities who miss the quiet and clear skies. There are many places to camp, like Camping Carnival, Kanatal Majestic Camp, Kanatal Glamping Facilities, and Camp O Baramasa. Spending a night here is peaceful and unforgettable!

Trekking and Nature Walks

  • In Kanatal, trekking and nature walks are a must! Forests like Kodia are perfect for peaceful walks in any weather. Start your trek on a narrow dirt path, and soon you’ll find yourself on a plateau with forests, rolling hills, and amazing views of the valley. Walking here feels like a relaxing forest bath, a concept called shinrin-yoku in Japanese.

Visiting Nearby Towns

  • After enjoying Tehri Lake, you can explore New Tehri, just 29 km from Kanatal. It’s a neat town with beautiful views, a cool vibe, and a big market for souvenirs. Another great place to visit is Dhanaulti, only 16 km away. It has two eco parks, Amber and Dhara, surrounded by oak and deodar trees. You can try rappelling and ziplining or simply enjoy nature. Both towns make for fun day trips!

  • Kanatal is perfect for rock climbing, with its rugged terrain, steep cliffs, and challenging routes. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, there’s something for everyone. How To Reach Kanatal from Dehradun

Fly to Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun or take a train to Dehradun Terminal Railway Station (DDN). From there, hire a bus or taxi via the Mussoorie-Chamba Road. Kanatal is about 70 km away. Buses and taxis are also available from places like Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Tehri, Chamba, and Mussoorie.

Best Time To Visit Kanatal

Visit Kanatal from March to June or September to November. In summer (15°C–25°C), the weather is great for trekking and outdoor fun. The post-monsoon months bring clear skies and colorful landscapes. In winter (December to February), it’s a snowy wonderland, but pack warm clothes for the cold!
