Discover Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary: Secret wildlife near Rishikesh

Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary lies  within the Yamunanagar District of Haryana. It lies amidst the foothills of the Shiwalik ranges of the Himalayas. Established as a national park in 2003, this sanctuary boasts a rich tapestry of flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike.

A Natural Tapestry of Diversity

The topography of Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary is a fascinating blend of plains and hills with narrow valleys locally known as “Khols.” These valleys are home to seasonal rivulets, or “Soats,” which meander through the landscape, adding to the sanctuary’s picturesque charm.

At the heart of the sanctuary stands the historic Kalesar Fort. It was famous during the reign of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Surrounding the fort are colonial-era Dak bungalows, reminiscent of a bygone era, adding a touch of nostalgia to the sanctuary’s ambiance.

Flora and Fauna

The sanctuary’s dense forests are predominantly populated by towering sal trees, alongside a rich variety of flora including khair, shisham, tun, sain, and amla. This diverse ecosystem provides a sanctuary for a plethora of wildlife species.

This Sanctuary is home to an impressive array of fauna, including threatened species such as leopards, Ghoral, Barking deer, Sambar, Chital, Python, King Cobra, Monitor lizard, and more. The sanctuary’s avian residents include the red junglefowl, grey partridge, Indian peafowl, and white-throated kingfisher, among others.
