• Photography: While photography is allowed, be sure to obtain explicit permission before photographing people not in your party. Avoid taking pictures during prayer ceremonies and respect the guidelines regarding the commercial use of images of Hanumanji.

Visiting Kainchi Dham: A Guide

Usually, devotees can stay for a maximum of three nights.

Kainchi Ashram History

Kainchi Dham is a beautiful and peaceful mountain ashram located in the Kumaon Hills of Uttarakhand. The first temple was opened in June 1964, and it’s about 38 km from Nainital. Many people visit the temples here every day, especially during the season.

The rules at the ashram are strict. If you stay here, you must join the morning and evening Arati (prayer ceremonies). The ashram closes for part of the year because it gets very cold.

Staying Inside the Ashram

To stay in this amazing ashram, you must write to the manager and ask for permission. Make sure you have a letter of introduction and have arranged everything beforehand. Remember, you can only stay for a maximum of three days!

It all started in 1962 when Maharajji called for Shri Poornanand from Kainchi village. They remembered their first meeting 20 years ago in 1942 and talked about the area. Maharajji wanted to see where Sadhu Premi Baba and Sombari Maharaj lived and performed Yagyas (sacrificial rituals). The forest was cleared, and Maharajji had a Chabootara (rectangular platform) built over the Yagyashala.

The Hanuman temple is now built over that platform, and devotees began coming from all over. Special ceremonies called bhandaras, kirtans, and bhajans started taking place. The idols of Hanumanji and others were installed on June 15 in different years.

This date is now celebrated every year as Pratishtha Divas, when many devotees come to Kainchi to receive Prasad (blessed food). Because so many people come, the district administration makes special arrangements to help everyone move around easily.

Kainchi Temple is very important to every devotee. It’s a place where Ram Dass and other westerners spent wonderful times with Maharajji. All devotees should visit this temple at least once in their lives!

Construction of Maharajji’s Temple at Kainchi

Maharajji left His physical body on the night of September 10, 1973. The Kalash containing His ashes was already at Shri Kainchi Dham. After that, without any formal plan, construction of Baba’s temple began in 1974, with the help of all His devotees.

The artisans and workers started their work by taking an early bath and wearing clean clothes. They recited the Hanuman Chalisa and chanted, “Maharajji Ki Jai” (glory to Maharajji). As the construction continued, devotees sang and did kirtan, creating a joyful atmosphere filled with devotion.

On June 15, 1976, they installed and consecrated Maharajji’s murti (idol). This date was chosen by Maharajji Himself for the consecration of Kainchi Dham. Before the ceremony, there were celebrations with the Bhagwat saptah and yajna (sacrificial offerings). The devotees hoisted the flag on the temple while the air filled with sounds of bells, drums, and joyful chanting.

The atmosphere was electric, filled with the feeling of Maharajji’s presence. With prayers and ceremonies, Maharajji’s murti was installed, so He could forever be present in Shri Kainchi Dham.
