The government has chosen the Kathgodam–Nainital–Kainchi Dham ropeway corridor as one of the flagship projects in the first phase.
Overview: Kainchi Dham Ropeway
- Phase 1: Ropeway from Kathgodam Railway Station to Nainital Ropeway.
- Phase 2: Extension from Nainital hill station to Kainchi Dham Ropeway (approx. 8 km).
As lakhs of pilgrims visit the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram each year, the new ropeway will provide devotees seamless access while reducing chronic traffic congestion at Kainchi Dham..
The ambitious ropeway plan envisions a comprehensive loop connecting:
- Dehradun Airport
- Tanakpur
- Pantnagar Airport
- Chardham circuit (Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri)
- Pindari Glacier
- Munsiyari
- Dharchula
- Kailash and Om Parvat areas
This ropeway system will not only ease congestion but also protect the environment while enhancing connectivity in a region revered for its sacredness and ecological sensitivity.

Why is Kainchi Dham special?
Kainchi Dham is a famous ashram because of Neem Karoli Baba. Actually its original name was Neeb Karori Ashram, but in common speaking it is being called now as Neem Karoli.
This ashram is situated about 17 kilometers from Nainital and 9 kilometers from Bhowali, and this ashram was got constructed in the 1960s by well-known spiritual guru Neeb Karoli Baba.
Baba was also known by the name Maharaj Ji, and many people consider him an incarnation of Hanuman Ji. In this temple, there are Neem Karoli Baba, Hanuman Ji, Ram-Sita statues. He was a great devotee of Hanuman Ji and during his lifetime he had got constructed many temples of Hanuman Ji.
Who was Neem Karoli Baba?
Neem Karoli Baba is known by the name Maharajji, was born in Uttar Pradesh (India) in Firozabad district’s Akbarpur village in a wealthy Brahmin landlord family. His name was Lakshmi Narayan Sharma and at the age of 11 itself his marriage also was done.
However, immediately after marriage he left home and went to Gujarat and kept wandering in different places across the whole country. In his whole lifetime he did many miracles and showed people the path of living life.
He also got two ashrams constructed, among which one in Uttarakhand’s Nainital district’s Kainchi and the other in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district’s Vrindavan. He chose Vrindavan for his Mahasamadhi. After reaching Agra on 10 September, he immediately left for Vrindavan, where on 11 September 1973 he took Mahasamadhi.

How to Reach Kainchi Dham?
Kainchi Dham is located about 17 km from Nainital, and you can easily reach here from any part of the country. You can travel by train, air, or personal vehicle. Kainchi Dham lies in the Nainital district.
If you are planning to travel by train, you need to book a train to Kathgodam Railway Station. The station is 38 km from Neem Karoli Baba’s Ashram. From there, you can easily hire a car or taxi to reach the ashram.
How to Reach Kainchi Dham from Delhi?
If you live in Delhi and want to visit Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram by bus, you can start your journey from the Kashmiri Gate Bus Stand.
- First, take a bus to Nainital.
- From Nainital, the ashram is about 17 km away.
- You can easily reach there by taking a shared cab or taxi.
