Kedartal Uttarakhand: A Bone-Chilling Lake at Kedarnath

The highlight of the trek is Kedartal Lake, also known as Shiva’s Lake, which is located at an altitude of 4,912 meters. The lake is by snow-capped peaks and offers a breathtaking view of the Himalayan range. According to Hindu mythology, the lake was formed by the tears of Lord Shiva, and take a dip in its waters to wash away one’s sins.

  1. Difficulty Level:

The trek  is a difficult trek and is suitable for experienced trekkers. It involves steep ascents and descents, and the trail can be slippery in places. Altitude sickness can also be a concern, and trekkers are advised to acclimatize properly before attempting the trek.

  1. Best Time to Visit:

The best time to visit,  is from May to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the sky is clear, offering an unobstructed view of the surrounding peaks. The trek remains closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall.

  1. Permits:

Visitors require permits to trek to Kedartal, which can be obtained from the Forest Department in Uttarkashi.

  1. Accommodation:

There are no accommodations available on the trek, and trekkers need to carry their own camping equipment. The Forest Department also provides camping facilities at the base camp in Gangotri.
