Vashishta Gufa (Vashishta Cave), located 22 km from Rishikesh and 6 km from Shivpuri, is an ancient and spiritually significant cave situated along the Rishikesh – Badrinath Road in Uttarakhand.

This peaceful cave, positioned on the banks of the Ganga River, holds great importance for meditation enthusiasts. According to legend, it is the very place where the great sage Vashishta, one of the Saptarishis (seven great sages) and the guru of Lord Ram, meditated.

Hindu mythology recounts that after the tragic loss of his children, Sage Vashishta contemplated ending his life in the Ganga River, but was stopped by Goddess Ganga. His wife, Arundhati, who was fond of the place, chose to remain there. Sage Vashishta then spent a long period meditating in the cave.

In 1930, Sri Swami Purushottamananda Ji visited Vashishta Gufa, and today, his ashram is located nearby, where meditation continues to be practiced. The cave, a natural formation extending 60 feet deep, houses a Shiv Linga that is tilted vertically near the opening.

This sacred space offers a serene environment for those seeking spiritual peace, and many visitors experience a profound sense of tranquility while meditating inside. Additionally, there are several rooms outside the cave where many sadhus (holy men) live permanently.

The Swami Purushottamanand Trust currently manages the cave, preserving its historical and spiritual legacy. It’s a must-visit spot for those looking to connect with nature and dive deeper into their meditation practice in the presence of a rich, spiritual heritage.
