Chaukori is a picturesque hill station in Uttarakhand. It sits at an altitude of around 2,010 meters above sea level within the Western Himalayan Range, just south of Tibet. The Mahakali River flows along its eastern side, forming the Indo-Nepal border.

Overview Chaukori in Uttarakhand

Chaukori sits  in the Western Himalayan mountain range in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of about 2,010 meters. Flanking its eastern border is the Mahakali River, which also serves as the boundary between India and Nepal.

It is within the Kumaon Division, Tibet lies to its north. This hill station is famous for its unparalleled views of snow-clad mountains and is surrounded by verdant valleys, deodar trees, and rhododendrons. Additionally, Chaukori boasts splendid fruit orchards and vast stretches of tea gardens.

The name “Chaukori” reflects its bowl-like shape, nestled amidst the Himalayas. Known for its serenity and pleasant weather.   It is also perfect for witnessing spectacular sunsets and sunrises, offering stunning views of the majestic Nanda Devi, Panchachuli peaks, and Nanda Kot. Bird watching and hiking are popular activities here, adding to the appeal of this tranquil hill station.

Things To Do In and Around Chaukori

Chaukori offers a variety of activities and sights that showcase its natural beauty and cultural significance. Here are some of the top things to do in and around this serene hill station:

  1. Trek to the Hanging Rocks

Embark on a short trek to the Hanging Rocks, a small hill that provides an excellent opportunity for bird watching and photography. This trek is particularly rewarding in the morning or evening when you can enjoy breathtaking sunrises or sunsets.

  1. Visit Patal Bhubaneshwari

Patal Bhubaneshwari is rock cut cave temple, built by  Pandavas and Draupadi for a short period. This unique attraction comprises several interconnected caves, with a small water body inside. However, it may not be suitable for those with heart issues due to its confined spaces.

  1. Explore Gangolihat

About 35 km from Chaukori, Gangolihat is home to the Haat Kalika Temple, Chamunda Mandir, and Vaishnavi Mandir, which offer panoramic views of the Himalayas. It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya performed penance here to please Adi Shakti.

  1. Visit Nag Mandir in Berinag

It lies about 10 km from Chaukori, the Nag Mandir is temple of  Sheshnag, who is said to maintain the stability of the earth and serves as Lord Vishnu’s bed. The Pandavas built this temple after witnessing numerous intertwined snakes at this spot. Berinag, named after the temple, also hosts vibrant festivities like Ramleela, Berinag Kautik, and Berinag Mahotsav, showcasing local folk music and dance.

  1. Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple

Approximately 3 hours from Chaukori, the Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple is a cave temple of Lord Shiva. The deity is enshrined about 10 meters into the cave. This temple is famous for its scenic views of the Soar Valley and the snow-clad Himalayas.

The Best Time to Visit Chaukori

The ideal time to visit Chaukori is either during the summer months from March to June or in the winter months from October to February. Each season offers a unique experience, allowing you to enjoy the hill station’s beauty in different ways.

Summer (March to June)
During the summer, Chaukori experiences warm but pleasant weather, making it an excellent escape from the high temperatures of the cities. This season is perfect for exploring the region comfortably, enjoying treks, and taking in the lush greenery.

Winter (October to February)
Winter is another fantastic time to visit Chaukori, especially if you enjoy cold weather and snow-covered landscapes. The region transforms into a winter wonderland, offering stunning views of snow-clad mountains. Just be sure to pack plenty of warm clothing to stay cozy.

Monsoon (July to September)
It’s advisable to avoid visiting Chaukori during the monsoon season. The heavy rainfall not only hampers sightseeing but also poses risks of landslides, making travel potentially hazardous.
