Discover Bhojbasa or Bhojwasa: The Last Point to stay after Gangotri

Bhojbasa is a small scenic key stop, located on the way to the Gaumukh Glacier in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It sits at an altitude of about 3,775 meters (12,383 feet) above sea level and is a popular stopover for trekkers on their way to the Gaumukh Glacier.

It is also spelled Bhojwasa,  famous for its stunning views of the Bhagirathi peaks, which are a range of majestic snow-covered peaks that rise up to 6,856 meters (22,493 feet) above sea level.

By the time you reach Bhojbasa, you will have trekked 14 kilometers from Gangotri. Upon arrival, you have two options: either rest for the night and continue to Gaumukh the next morning, or push on to Gaumukh and return to Bhojbasa for the night. Since the Gaumukh permit is valid for only two days, you must return to Gangotri the following day.

It’s advisable not to proceed to Gaumukh on the first day. The trek to Gaumukh is another 5 kilometers and becomes more challenging. Rushing to reach and return before dark won’t allow you to enjoy the glacier. Therefore, it’s better to stay overnight at Bhojbasa and start fresh for Gaumukh the next morning.

Chirbasa

It, literally meaning ‘abode of Chir’ or pine trees, is a village located at 3,350 meters. The route from Chirbasa to Bhojbasa can be treacherous due to loose rocks falling on the trail. Bhojbasa, also written as Bhojwasa, is a vast open expanse of land in the valley.

The trek to Gaumukh provides dazzling views of renowned Himalayan peaks such as Shivling, Thalay Sagar, Meru, and Bhagirathi III, among others. However, due to the quickened pace of the retreat of the local glaciers in recent years, major steps have been taken by the Uttarakhand government to restrict the number of trekkers allowed each day to just 100.
