Ancient Tunnel System Found Near Uttarakhand’s Gobradi Village

Mountaineer Tarun Mahara,

Mountaineer and historian Tarun Mahara, along with local villagers, became the first to explore the mysterious ancient tunnel system near Gobradi village in Uttarakhand. Mahara and his companion, Chandan Karki, entered the tunnel through a four-foot-wide opening and made some fascinating discoveries.

Near the site, they found the remains of a large fort-like structure and around 30 to 35 smaller houses, hinting at a once-thriving settlement. Villagers had long known about the tunnels, with stories of their existence passed down through generations.

Equipped with torches, cameras, and ropes, Mahara and his team ventured deeper into the tunnels. Mahara noted that the tunnels were carved using chisels and picks, showcasing impressive ancient craftsmanship. However, their exploration was halted when they encountered blocked pathways.

“We descended about 100 meters, but two paths were blocked by stones. When we tried to remove them, steam-like smoke began to rise,” Mahara explained.

Locals believe one blocked path leads to a palace and Shiva temple, while the other might connect to the nearby river. Historians suspect the site could be linked to the Katyuri dynasty, which ruled the Kumaon region from 700 to 1200 CE.
