A Journey Through History:

The history of Guptar Ghat stretches back to the era of the epic Ramayana. Sage Agastya, in response to Sage Vyasadeva’s inquiry, narrates the divine play of Lord Rama’s departure to Vaikuntha through Guptar Ghat in the Skanda Purana. As Lord Rama’s mission on Earth neared its end, He made the momentous decision to return to Vaikuntha, accompanied by His devoted brothers, Bharata and Shatrughna.

The Sahasradhara Tirtha:

The divine plan of Lord Rama’s departure was not a secret to the versatile vanaras (monkey-men) who had assisted Him in His divine mission. These beings, capable of assuming any form, rushed to Lord Rama upon hearing the news of His imminent departure. Fearing the separation from their beloved Lord, they beseeched Him to allow them to follow Him.

Lord Rama, in His infinite compassion, granted their request. He entrusted the kingdom of Lanka to Vibhishana and bestowed a special blessing upon Hanuman and two other vanaras, Mainda and Dvivida, who had partaken of nectar.

The Grand Departure:

On a magnificent morning, Lord Rama, with His majestic presence, instructed Sage Vasishtha to ensure that all sacred fires, including Agnihotra sacrifices, preceded His departure. Clothed in white attire and holding darbha grass in His lotus hands, Lord Rama embarked on His journey to Sarayu, flanked by the celestial beings Lakshmi Devi and Vishalakshi Devi.

The procession was awe-inspiring, with personifications of His divine weapons, the Vedas, and the deities themselves following in reverence. Sages, including Lord Narayana, accompanied Him, as did the citizens of Ayodhya, ministers, and officials. The atmosphere was filled with boundless joy as they prepared to join their beloved Lord on His divine voyage.

Lord Rama’s Immersion:

Upon reaching Swargadwara, Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, arrived to welcome Lord Rama. The sky was adorned with countless aerial chariots carrying eminent personalities from the celestial realms. Sweet-scented breezes and showers of fragrant flowers filled the air. As Lord Rama stepped into the sacred Sarayu River.  Lord Brahma extolled His divinity and recognizing Him as the Supreme Lord Vishnu Himself.

Lord Rama then instructed Lord Brahma to prepare divine abodes for the residents of Ayodhya. With His brothers, Bharata and Shatrughna, by His side, He commenced His journey to Vaikuntha. In a miraculous turn of events, the waters of Guptar Ghat surged forth, flooding the area. All those who had followed Lord Rama into the river, with hearts filled with love and devotion, transcended to Vaikuntha, the ultimate abode of bliss.
