Neelkanth Mahadev Temple where Lord Shiva Drank the Poison

The famous mythological legend associated with this temple. According to the most ancient legend, during the churning of the divine ocean (Samudra Manthan), many kind of treasures emerged out of it, and were supposed to be distributed among gods and demons.

However, a deadly poison called Halahala also emerged out of it . Neither the gods nor the demons wanted to intake it. The poison was so dangerous that it had the power to kill the entire universe. Its intense heat was spreading in all directions, causing chaos.

Therefore, to save the entire universe, Lord Shiva drank the poison, while drinking it, Goddess Parvati stood beside him and hold throat tightly to ensure that the poison must stuck in his throat.

After paying visit to Shiva shrine, you begin your downhill trail passing through Rajaji National Park, on the way there are some shops for tea break and lush forests for rest, and stunning viewpoints from where you can watch the entire Rishikesh area and Ganga valley.

Baba Cave, where a Jatadhari Baba lives. Once you reach there, take a spiritual tea break and enjoy a conversation with him over a cup of tea beside the gently flowing freshwater stream.

He observes silence but usually responds to seekers’ questions by writing on paper. However, only spiritual questions are welcomed by him. Since he has spent many years practicing meditation in the cave, he is considered to be spiritually realized to some extent.

After visiting Mauni Baba Ashram, walk down to the Swarg Ashram area on the left bank of the Ganges, near Ram Jhula or Janki Setu. This is where your full-day adventure will conclude.
