Uttarakhand Hemkund Sahib : A High Mountain Pilgrimage

Uttarakhand Hemkund Sahib, also known as Gurudwara Sri Hemkunt Sahib Ji, is a very special place for Sikhs. It is located high up in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India.

Hemkund sahib height at  4,329 meters (14,200 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest Sikh Gurudwaras in the world!

The Gurudwara sits next to Hemkund Lake, also called the “Lake of Snow,” which is how the Gurudwara got its name. This holy place is dedicated to the tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who lived from 1666 to 1708. Hemkund Sahib is even mentioned in a sacred text called the Dasam Granth, which is all about Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

To visit Uttarakhand Hemkund Sahib, people must go on a challenging trek. The path is steep and rocky, and it can take several hours to reach the Gurudwara. But don’t worry! For those who find it hard to walk, ponies and porters are available to help. The pilgrimage season usually starts in late May and goes on until early September, when the weather is nice enough to make the journey.

  • From Govindghat, a 14-kilometer trek unfolds, leading pilgrims through rugged terrain to the village of Ghangharia. From there, a 5-kilometer ascent awaits, culminating in the revered sanctuary of Hemkund Sahib.
