Ayodhya’s Resurgence:

Ayodhya, a sacred town in northern India. It holds historical significance as the birthplace of Rama in Hinduism and as a notable center of Buddhism.  It sits on the Ghaghara River, east of Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh.  Ayodhya is considered one of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism, celebrated for its association with the Ramayana epic and the rule of Dasharatha, Rama’s father. The town’s ancient history reflects prosperity, fortification, and a large population.

Varanasi’s Ascendance:

2nd millennium BCE in the middle Ganges valley. Emerging as a major urban settlement, it became a hub for Vedic religion, philosophy, commerce, and industry. Renowned for muslin, silk fabrics, perfumes, ivory works, and sculpture, Varanasi was the capital of the kingdom of Kashi during the Buddha’s time. The city persisted as a center of religious, educational, and artistic activities, spanning about 3 miles along the Ganges, as noted by the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang in 635 CE.

Prayagraj’s Timeless Appeal:

Prayagraj, rooted in ancient Prayag, holds historical significance comparable to Varanasi and Haridwar. The city’s importance dates back to the Buddhist era, evident in inscriptions on a 3rd-century-BCE pillar attributed to Emperor Ashoka. This pillar, relocated during Mughal times, still stands within the old Prayagraj fort at the strategic confluence of two rivers. The site remains sacred in Hinduism. It hosts an annual riverside festival and the grand Kumbh Mela every 12 years, drawing millions of devotees.
