History: Devprayag in Uttarakhand

Devprayag is the last meeting point of the Alaknanda river in the series of Panch Prayag. It is where the Alaknanda river joins the Bhagirathi river in Tehri district of Uttarakhand. After this meeting, the two rivers flow together as the Ganga river.

The name Devprayag comes from sage Dev Sharma, who lived in the Satyug. It is believed that sage Dev Sharma worshipped Lord Vishnu at this spot. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Vishnu blessed him, saying that the place of worship would be known by the sage’s name in the future.

Bhagirathi river comes from Gaumukh, and the Alaknanda river starts from Satopanth. These two rivers meet right at Devprayag. This place is a well-known pilgrimage destination on the Char Dham Yatra route.

Chronicles of Devprayag

In Hindu mythology, Devprayag is believed to be the place where Lord Ram meditated for years to repent for the sin of killing Ravana, a Brahmin. It is said that after this act, Lord Ram came to Devprayag on the advice of the sages in his court to wash away his sins.

According to tradition, another river, called Saraswati, is believed to merge at this place. It is said to start from Mana Village in Badrinath. In Devprayag, this river is believed to flow from the feet of Lord Ram in the Raghunath Temple. There is also evidence of Lord Ram’s footprints at Ram Kunda.

Essence of Devprayag Sangam

Devprayag is historically significant as the land of the late Acharya Pt. Chakradhar Joshi. In 1946, he set up the Nakshatra Veda Shala on Dashrathanchal Mountain, located above Devprayag. This observatory is equipped with the latest tools and equipment.

Acharya Pt. Chakradhar Joshi was the pioneer behind establishing the Nakshatra Veda Shala near Devprayag. In addition to this, ancient instruments like Surya Ghati and Dhruv Ghati are present here, making the observatory a symbol of India’s progress in astronomy.

Devprayag is surrounded by three holy peaks: Giddhanchal Parvat, Dashrathanchal Parvat, and Narsinghancal Parvat.

Devotees visit Devprayag to worship Lord Shiva in the forms of Tondeshwar Mahadev and Dhaneshwar Mahadev. Another popular spot is the Mata Bhuvneshwari Temple in Pundal Village. Other famous temples nearby include the Danda Nagaraja Temple (Lord of Snakes) and Chandrabadni Temple.
