The Dalai Lama Temple in McLeodganj is the official residence of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, the head of the exiled Tibetans in India.  It is located at the end of Temple Road. This complex spans a large area and features a museum depicting the struggle of the Tibetans against Chinese oppression.

The main temple, and the Dalai Lama’s residence. Beautifully decorated with Tibetan paintings. The temple has two floors. Visitors should be prepared for a security check before entering, as there is always a threat to the life of the Dalai Lama from the Chinese.

Inside the temple, there is a large prayer hall with a beautiful statue of Padmasambhava, or Guru Rinpoche. The temple attracts a large crowd, both Indian and international.

The area outside the temple offers very little space  for parking and accommodate the large crowd  during peak seasons. It is important to remember that this is a place for prayer and silence should be maintained. The numerous prayer wheels present great photo opportunities.

Dalai Lama Dharamsala Schedule

For all teachings in Dharamsala, registration is required, beginning a few days before the teaching and ending the day before it starts. Registration hours are from 9 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm at the Main Tibetan Temple (Tsuglhakhang) courtyard.

For registration, foreigners need copies of their passport, Indian visa, and ‘C’ form, while residents of India need copies of their Aadhaar card. A nominal fee of Rs. 10 will be charged.

Dalai Lama Temple Museum

The Dalai Lama Museum, located within the Tsuglakhang ComplexIt is a major point of attraction for visitors. Inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama himself in 2000. The museum showcases elaborate pictures and photographs of the Dalai Lama and Tibetan culture.

Visitors can also watch a short video on the culture and teachings of Buddhism. The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day of the week except on Mondays. A minimal entry fee of INR 5 is charged for admission.
