Discover Beatles Ashram’s Restoration project for Spiritual Retreat

Hidden inside the forests of Rishikesh, the legendary Beatles Ashram is once again in the spotlight—this time for an ambitious restoration and revival project that aims to transform it into a world-class spiritual and cultural retreat.

This is the very place where the world’s most iconic band, The Beatles, stayed in 1968 while learning Transcendental Meditation under their guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Beatles Ashram: A Place That Changed Music History

In February 1968, band members George Harrison, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr arrived in Rishikesh in search of spiritual awakening. Their stay at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram deeply influenced their music and philosophy.

🎵 It was here that they composed several songs for the legendary White Album, including:

  • Back in the USSR

  • Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

For Beatles fans across the globe, this ashram is no less than a pilgrimage site.

Chaurasi Kutiya: Meaning & Architecture

The original name of the ashram is Chaurasi Kutiya, meaning “84 huts”:

  • 42 meditation huts on each side of the yoga complex

  • About 25 buildings in total

  • Meditation cells designed like mountain caves to stay cool in summer

Each dome-shaped hut symbolized a specific yogic posture, reflecting the deep connection between architecture and meditation.

Years of Neglect & Artistic Expression

After the Beatles left, the ashram slowly fell into neglect. Over time:

  • Buildings deteriorated

  • Walls filled with Beatles-inspired graffiti & murals

  • Moss, cracked plaster, and damaged concrete spread

Despite the decay, the site gained a cult status, especially among international travelers, artists, and photographers.

“This is where the Beatles wrote music that still inspires me today. Seeing it abandoned was heartbreaking—but being here was unforgettable.”

His words echo what many visitors feel—a powerful mix of inspiration, nostalgia, and hope for the ashram’s revival.
