In his anger, Shiva used his trident to sever Brahma’s fifth head. This fifth head, associated in various stories with either Brahma’s arrogance or desire, stuck to Shiva’s trident, thereby bestowing upon Shiva the grave sin of Brahma-hatya (killing a Brahmin or creator deity).
To seek atonement for this sin, Shiva visited numerous holy sites, but nowhere could he rid himself of this guilt. Eventually, as Shiva bathed in the Alaknanda river near Badrikashram and proceeded toward Badrinath, a miraculous event occurred—the fifth head of Brahma finally detached from Shiva’s hand and fell to the ground. The spot where the head fell became known as Brahma Kapal.
