It is mentioned in the <strong data-start=\"302\" data-end=\"319\">Skanda Purana<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"321\" data-end=\"335\">Kedarkhand<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"341\" data-end=\"363\">Shrimad Bhagavatam<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"150\" data-end=\"731\">According to <strong data-start=\"378\" data-end=\"401\">mythological belief<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"403\" data-end=\"418\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Lord Vishnu<\/strong> incarnated as <strong data-start=\"433\" data-end=\"450\">Nara-Narayana<\/strong>, the sons of <strong data-start=\"464\" data-end=\"474\">Dharma<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"479\" data-end=\"493\">Mata Murti<\/strong>, and performed <strong data-start=\"509\" data-end=\"520\">penance<\/strong> here for the welfare of the world.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"150\" data-end=\"731\">The <strong data-start=\"560\" data-end=\"580\">Badrinath Temple<\/strong>, situated on the <strong data-start=\"598\" data-end=\"635\">right bank of the Alaknanda River<\/strong>, houses a <strong data-start=\"646\" data-end=\"680\">self-manifested Shaligram idol<\/strong> of <strong data-start=\"684\" data-end=\"702\">Lord Badrinath<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"706\" data-end=\"728\">meditative posture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"150\" data-end=\"731\"><strong data-start=\"737\" data-end=\"757\">Idol of Narayana<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"733\" data-end=\"1213\">The <strong data-start=\"737\" data-end=\"757\">idol of Narayana<\/strong>, in <strong data-start=\"762\" data-end=\"775\">Padmasana<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"780\" data-end=\"799\">four-armed form<\/strong>, is said to be <strong data-start=\"815\" data-end=\"837\">eternal and divine<\/strong>, giving devotees visions of their <strong data-start=\"872\" data-end=\"890\">chosen deities<\/strong>. Followers of <strong data-start=\"905\" data-end=\"949\">Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism<\/strong> all visit the shrine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"733\" data-end=\"1213\">The name <strong data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"994\">Badrinath<\/strong> comes from a legend \u2014 when <strong data-start=\"1022\" data-end=\"1037\">Lord Vishnu<\/strong> performed penance here, <strong data-start=\"1062\" data-end=\"1081\">Goddess Lakshmi<\/strong> took the form of a <strong data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1115\">Badri tree<\/strong> to protect him from the cold, thus the place became known as <strong data-start=\"1177\" data-end=\"1210\">Badrinath (the Lord of Badri)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"733\" data-end=\"1213\">In <strong data-start=\"1218\" data-end=\"1229\">Satyuga<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1215\" data-end=\"1775\">In <strong data-start=\"1218\" data-end=\"1229\">Satyuga<\/strong>, it was known as <strong data-start=\"1247\" data-end=\"1261\">Muktiprada<\/strong>; in <strong data-start=\"1266\" data-end=\"1279\">Tretayuga<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1281\" data-end=\"1297\">Yogasiddhida<\/strong>; in <strong data-start=\"1302\" data-end=\"1316\">Dwaparyuga<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1318\" data-end=\"1329\">Vishala<\/strong>; and in <strong data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1350\">Kaliyuga<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1352\" data-end=\"1369\">Badarikashram<\/strong>. Before leaving the region, <strong data-start=\"1398\" data-end=\"1413\">Lord Vishnu<\/strong> promised to remain spiritually present in the <strong data-start=\"1460\" data-end=\"1474\">Narad Kund<\/strong>, where his <strong data-start=\"1486\" data-end=\"1501\">divine idol<\/strong> was later retrieved and installed by <strong data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1551\">the gods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1215\" data-end=\"1775\">Even today, during <strong data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1582\">summer<\/strong>, humans perform worship, while in <strong data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1627\">winter<\/strong>, when the <strong data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1655\">temple closes<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1676\">Devarshi Narada<\/strong> is believed to perform the rituals, and the <strong data-start=\"1721\" data-end=\"1754\">eternal flame (Akhanda Jyoti)<\/strong> continues to burn.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1777\" data-end=\"2329\">The <strong data-start=\"1781\" data-end=\"1796\">Dharmashila<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1798\" data-end=\"1819\">Mata Murti Temple<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1821\" data-end=\"1848\">Nara-Narayana Mountains<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1854\" data-end=\"1874\">Sheshnetra Lakes<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"1878\" data-end=\"1895\">Badarikashram<\/strong> are linked to the legend of <strong data-start=\"1924\" data-end=\"1956\">Sahasrakavacha\u2019s destruction<\/strong>. <strong data-start=\"1958\" data-end=\"1976\">Rishi Ved Vyas<\/strong> composed the <strong data-start=\"1990\" data-end=\"2001\">Puranas<\/strong> in a nearby <strong data-start=\"2014\" data-end=\"2027\">Vyas Cave<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1777\" data-end=\"2329\">During later times, <strong data-start=\"2049\" data-end=\"2071\">Buddhist influence<\/strong> spread, and priests hid the <strong data-start=\"2100\" data-end=\"2122\">idol in Narad Kund<\/strong> to protect it. <strong data-start=\"2138\" data-end=\"2160\">Adi Shankaracharya<\/strong>, an incarnation of <strong data-start=\"2180\" data-end=\"2194\">Lord Shiva<\/strong>, rediscovered and reinstalled the <strong data-start=\"2229\" data-end=\"2237\">idol<\/strong> at its original place, reestablishing <strong data-start=\"2276\" data-end=\"2289\">Badrinath<\/strong> as a major <strong data-start=\"2301\" data-end=\"2326\">Hindu pilgrimage site<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1777\" data-end=\"2329\"><strong data-start=\"2331\" data-end=\"2353\">Adi Shankaracharya<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2331\" data-end=\"2873\"><strong data-start=\"2331\" data-end=\"2353\">Adi Shankaracharya<\/strong> also founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/rishikeshdaytour.com\/blogoldsite\/temples-in-joshimath-jyotirmath\/\"><strong data-start=\"2371\" data-end=\"2388\">Jyotir Peeth<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"2392\" data-end=\"2405\">Joshimath<\/strong><\/a> and stayed in the <strong data-start=\"2424\" data-end=\"2437\">Vyas Cave<\/strong> for four years, composing commentaries on the <strong data-start=\"2484\" data-end=\"2501\">Brahma Sutras<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2503\" data-end=\"2511\">Gita<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2517\" data-end=\"2531\">Upanishads<\/strong>. After the <strong data-start=\"227\" data-end=\"270\">destruction of the demon Sahasrakavacha<\/strong>, when <strong data-start=\"277\" data-end=\"292\">Lord Vishnu<\/strong> appeared as <strong data-start=\"305\" data-end=\"326\">child Nar-Narayan<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"328\" data-end=\"347\">Goddess Lakshmi<\/strong> incarnated as a <strong data-start=\"364\" data-end=\"392\">Badri tree (Jujube tree)<\/strong> to protect her husband from <strong data-start=\"421\" data-end=\"452\">cold, rain, storm, and snow<\/strong>, covering <strong data-start=\"463\" data-end=\"479\">Lord Narayan<\/strong> from all sides.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"130\" data-end=\"601\">The <strong data-start=\"500\" data-end=\"514\">Badri tree<\/strong> thus gave the shrine its name \u2014 <strong data-start=\"547\" data-end=\"560\">Badrinath<\/strong>, meaning <strong data-start=\"570\" data-end=\"598\">the Lord (Nath) of Badri<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"1306\">In <strong data-start=\"606\" data-end=\"621\">South India<\/strong>, as an <strong data-start=\"629\" data-end=\"658\">incarnation of Lord Shiva<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"660\" data-end=\"692\">Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya<\/strong> was born. At the age of <strong data-start=\"717\" data-end=\"727\">eleven<\/strong>, he reached <strong data-start=\"740\" data-end=\"753\">Badrinath<\/strong> via <strong data-start=\"758\" data-end=\"771\">Joshimath<\/strong> and, upon finding the <strong data-start=\"794\" data-end=\"810\">temple empty<\/strong>, realized through <strong data-start=\"829\" data-end=\"847\">divine insight<\/strong> that the <strong data-start=\"857\" data-end=\"880\">idol of Lord Vishnu<\/strong> was lying in the <strong data-start=\"898\" data-end=\"912\">Narad Kund<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"1306\">He himself descended into the <strong data-start=\"944\" data-end=\"958\">Narad Kund<\/strong> and recovered the <strong data-start=\"977\" data-end=\"997\">black stone idol<\/strong>. Initially, he doubted that it could be <strong data-start=\"1038\" data-end=\"1060\">Lord Vishnu\u2019s idol<\/strong> and returned it to the water, but every time he dived in, the same <strong data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1160\">idol reappeared in his hands<\/strong>, confirming its divinity. <strong data-start=\"1187\" data-end=\"1209\">Adi Shankaracharya<\/strong> then <strong data-start=\"1215\" data-end=\"1239\">reinstalled the idol<\/strong> in the <strong data-start=\"1247\" data-end=\"1280\">center of the Bhairavi Chakra<\/strong>, where it stands today.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1308\" data-end=\"1660\">It is also believed that<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adi_Shankara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <strong data-start=\"1333\" data-end=\"1360\">Adi Guru Shankaracharya<\/strong> <\/a>restored the <strong data-start=\"1374\" data-end=\"1394\">Badrinath Temple<\/strong> and established the <strong data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1432\">Jyotir Peeth<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"1436\" data-end=\"1449\">Joshimath<\/strong> after performing <strong data-start=\"1467\" data-end=\"1478\">penance<\/strong> there. Near <strong data-start=\"1491\" data-end=\"1504\">Badrinath<\/strong>, in the <strong data-start=\"1513\" data-end=\"1526\">Vyas Cave<\/strong>, he spent <strong data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1551\">four years<\/strong> composing commentaries on the <strong data-start=\"1582\" data-end=\"1599\">Brahma Sutras<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1601\" data-end=\"1618\">Bhagavad Gita<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1620\" data-end=\"1634\">Upanishads<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1640\" data-end=\"1657\">Sanatsujatiya<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1662\" data-end=\"2031\">As an <strong data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1697\">incarnation of Lord Shiva<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1699\" data-end=\"1727\">Jagadguru Shankaracharya<\/strong> reorganized the management of <strong data-start=\"1758\" data-end=\"1775\">Hindu temples<\/strong> in this region and established <strong data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1825\">Shri Badrinath<\/strong> as the <strong data-start=\"1833\" data-end=\"1870\">foremost among India\u2019s four Dhams<\/strong>, associating it with <strong data-start=\"1892\" data-end=\"1902\">Dwarka<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1904\" data-end=\"1922\">Jagannath Puri<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"1943\">Rameshwaram<\/strong>. These <strong data-start=\"1951\" data-end=\"1965\">Char Dhams<\/strong> hold immense <strong data-start=\"1979\" data-end=\"2017\">cultural and national significance<\/strong> even today.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2033\" data-end=\"2522\">Since the time of <strong data-start=\"2051\" data-end=\"2069\">Shankaracharya<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2071\" data-end=\"2086\">Lord Vishnu<\/strong> has been worshipped here as the <strong data-start=\"2119\" data-end=\"2158\">presiding deity of this holy tirtha<\/strong>, with <strong data-start=\"2165\" data-end=\"2182\">daily rituals<\/strong> following the <strong data-start=\"2197\" data-end=\"2225\">pure Vaishnava tradition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2033\" data-end=\"2522\">The <strong data-start=\"2231\" data-end=\"2255\">chief priest (Rawal)<\/strong> of <strong data-start=\"2259\" data-end=\"2284\">Shri Badrinath Temple<\/strong> is always a <strong data-start=\"2297\" data-end=\"2334\">highly learned Namboodiri Brahmin<\/strong> from the <strong data-start=\"2344\" data-end=\"2377\">Malabar region of South India<\/strong>, descending from <strong data-start=\"2395\" data-end=\"2427\">Adi Shankaracharya\u2019s lineage<\/strong>. Worship in <strong data-start=\"2440\" data-end=\"2458\">Shri Badrinath<\/strong> continues to be performed according to <strong data-start=\"2498\" data-end=\"2519\">Vaishnava
