          A similar suspension bridge built in 1986 at Sivananda Nagar,<\/strong> located nearby, is another key attraction in Rishikesh. Together, these bridges represent the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the town.<\/p>\n

          Lakshman Jhula continues to be one of the most visited spots in Rishikesh<\/strong>, celebrated for its religious history, spiritual ambiance, and captivating views of the Ganges and the Himalayan foothills.<\/p>\n

          There are some quieter neighborhoods<\/strong> in Rishikesh<\/strong> that are on both sides of the Ganga River<\/strong>. These places are located between two well-known bridges, called Ram Jhula<\/strong> and Laxman Jhula<\/strong> (sometimes spelled Lakshman Jhula<\/strong>). These areas are peaceful because they are close to the river<\/strong> and the mountains<\/strong>, away from the busy, noisy<\/strong> part of Rishikesh city.<\/p>\n

          However, Laxman Jhula<\/strong> has been closed since July 2019<\/strong>. This bridge, built in 1929<\/strong>, had become really old\u2014almost 90 years<\/strong>\u2014and needed major repairs<\/strong> to be safe again. While they fix it, there is a temporary ferry<\/strong> that helps people cross the Ganges River<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

          Bajrang Setu Update October 2024:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          A new bridge called Bajrang Setu<\/strong> is being built as a replacement for Laxman Jhula<\/strong>. This bridge will be made of cables<\/strong> and glass<\/strong>, which sounds really modern and cool! But, it\u2019s still under construction<\/strong> and not open yet. No one knows exactly when it will be ready, and there\u2019s no official date mentioned in any Indian news<\/strong> reports.<\/p>\n

          For now, the ferry<\/strong> is still the only way to cross the Ganges<\/strong> in the Laxman Jhula<\/strong> area.<\/p>\n

          The temporary ferry<\/strong> is really useful because it helps people cross the holy Ganges River<\/strong> between the neighborhoods of Tapovan<\/strong> and Laxman Jhula<\/strong>. Without the ferry, people would have to walk on a busy road<\/strong>, which isn\u2019t very safe or fun.<\/p>\n

          Tapovan Rishikesh<\/h3>\n

          Tapovan<\/strong> is located on a steep hill<\/strong> with twisting, narrow roads<\/strong>. These roads eventually lead to a main road that turns into a two-lane \u2018highway\u2019 on either side of the neighborhood. On this highway, it can get really crowded with motorcycles<\/strong>, rickshaws<\/strong>, cars<\/strong>, trucks<\/strong>, and buses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

          And believe it or not, even cows<\/strong> can cause traffic jams! The drivers<\/strong> on this road are often impatient, which makes it a bit dangerous<\/strong>, especially in the narrow spots<\/strong>. So, the ferry is definitely a safer option!<\/p>\n

          In Tapovan<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find more hotels<\/strong>, restaurants<\/strong>, and shops<\/strong>, but if you want a nicer, quieter walk, Laxman Jhula<\/strong> is the better spot\u2014at least while the Laxman Jhula bridge<\/strong> is still closed.<\/p>\n

          Unlike Tapovan, which is on a steep hill<\/strong>, Laxman<\/strong> is flat<\/strong> and runs along the Ganga River<\/strong>. There isn\u2019t much motor traffic<\/strong>, though you\u2019ll still find cows<\/strong> strolling down the road, which adds to the charm.<\/p>\n

          Ferry Details at Laxman Jhula<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          • From Tapovan<\/strong>, the ferry leaves from Pebble Beach<\/strong>, but only when there are enough passengers.<\/li>\n
          • From the Lakshman Jhula neighborhood<\/strong>, the ferry departs from the Boating Center<\/strong>\u2014a small, white sand beach behind the restaurants and shops.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            You may need to wait a bit, especially depending on the time of day. Sometimes, if one side has a queue<\/strong>, the ferry will make an empty trip to pick up passengers waiting on the other side. The ferry ride costs just 40 rupees<\/strong> ($0.50) and takes about two minutes<\/strong> to cross the river.<\/p>\n

            For those with mobility issues<\/strong>, a small but important note: there are no steps<\/strong> at the dock on either side, so you might need to take a big step<\/strong> to get on the ferry. Once, an Indian man<\/strong> even helped lift me up from the dock!<\/p>\n

            There\u2019s a chance that an extra ferry<\/strong> could be added at Laxman Jhula<\/strong> if the International Yoga Festival<\/strong> in March 2023 draws in a big crowd, especially after the pandemic.<\/p>\n

            More Expensive Ways to Cross the Ganga<\/h3>\n

            If you’re in a hurry and need to cross the Ganga<\/strong>, you can opt for a private boat ride<\/strong> at the Laxman Jhula<\/strong> crossing, which costs about 400 rupees<\/strong> (less than $5<\/strong>). You can take this ride at any time, and it might be worth it if you\u2019re traveling in a group!<\/p>\n

            Rickshaws<\/strong> are also found everywhere and will happily charge you a fee to cross another bridge southwest of Ram Jhula<\/strong> (although I haven\u2019t tried that route, so I\u2019m not sure about the price).<\/p>\n

            In the grand scheme of things, neither the boat ride nor the rickshaw is particularly \u2018expensive.\u2019 However, if you\u2019re a budget traveler<\/strong> like me and plan to cross the river every day\u2014sometimes more than once\u2014those costs can really add up!<\/p>\n

            Places to See\u00a0 around Laxman Jhula area<\/h3>\n

            Places to Visit in Tapovan, Rishikesh<\/h3>\n

            1. Satsang at Tapovan<\/strong>
            \nTapovan is a wonderful destination for visitors seeking comfortable and affordable accommodations. It serves as a hub for listening to wise spiritual teachers like Mooji<\/strong> and Prem Baba<\/strong>. With numerous yoga schools in the area, it\u2019s ideal for yoga enthusiasts looking to deepen their practice.<\/p>\n

            2. Homestay Options<\/strong>
            \nThe homestays in Tapovan are cozy and conveniently located near attractions like Laxman Jhula<\/strong> and Kriya Yoga Ashram<\/strong>. Being close to the Tapovan Auto Stand, they provide easy access to adventure activities such as bungee jumping<\/strong> and rafting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

            3. Patho Village Trek<\/strong>
            \nThe Patho Village trek<\/strong> is a delightful hiking spot near Tapovan. This half-day trek features beautiful green paths, a winding river, and stunning views of Rishikesh from above, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers.<\/p>\n

            4. Secret Waterfall<\/strong>
            \nNature lovers must not miss the Secret Waterfall<\/strong>! Although it requires a bit of hiking, the sound of rushing water guides you to its breathtaking sight, making the trek totally worth it.<\/p>\n
