Deogarh got its name from Raja Deval<\/strong>. It is believed that Devalgarh Uttarakhand<\/strong> was founded by Raja Deval of Kangra<\/strong> in the 14th century. The place was named after him. According to another story, there was an ashram<\/strong> of a sage named Deval<\/strong> here, and later the followers of Guru Gorakhnath<\/strong><\/a> set up Satya Nath<\/strong> in this area.<\/p>\n

The history of Devalgarh Uttarakhand<\/strong> is linked to the Panwar kings<\/strong>. In the 16th century, there was a kingdom of the Panwar dynasty<\/strong> in Garhwal<\/strong>.<\/a> During this time, King Raja Ajay Pal<\/strong> of the Panwar dynasty moved his capital from Chandpur<\/strong> to Devalgarh<\/strong> because of the invasion by the Kumaon kings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It is said that the royal family would spend their summers in Devalgarh<\/strong> and winters in Srinagar<\/strong>. King Ajay Pal<\/strong> is also believed to have formed the state of Garhwal<\/strong> by uniting 52 small strongholds, from where he ruled over all of Garhwal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Devalgarh is located on a high hill<\/strong>, allowing King Ajay Pal<\/strong> to keep an eye on all 52 bastions<\/strong> and easily monitor any enemies. However, he only made Devalgarh<\/strong> his capital for 5 years<\/strong>. After facing some issues, he moved the capital to Srinagar<\/strong>. One of the major problems in Devalgarh was the water shortage<\/strong>, which led to King Ajay Pal relocating his capital.<\/p>\n

It is believed that King Ajay Pal<\/strong> himself built the Raj Rajeshwari Temple<\/strong> and also established Shri Satyanath Bhairav<\/strong> and Raj Rajeshwari Yantra<\/strong> there.<\/p>\n

This place also holds the seat of the famous Satya Nath ji<\/strong> of the Nath sect<\/strong>. In ancient times, Devalgarh<\/strong> was an important pilgrimage site for Nathpanthi Yogis<\/strong>, and it is home to the Samadhi<\/strong> of many Nagpanthi Mahants<\/strong>, with Satyanath Samadhi<\/strong> being the most famous.<\/p>\n

When King Ajay Pal made Devalgarh<\/strong> his capital, he built a temple-like structure using stones from damaged temples and placed all the deities inside it.<\/p>\n

However, when he later shifted his capital to Srinagar<\/strong>, he handed over the building to the temple<\/strong>. Ajay Pal chose Srinagar<\/strong> due to its strategic and commercial importance at the time.<\/p>\n

  • The temple was built after King Ajay Pal<\/strong> made Devalgarh<\/strong> the capital of the Garhwal<\/strong> region. The temple sits on a plateau<\/strong> with three large sections, each four floors<\/strong> high. These sections are adorned with overhanging eaves<\/strong> and aesthetic bases<\/strong>. The windows of the temple are carved directly into the exterior rock wall, with no wood used in the construction.<\/li>\n
