Kilkileshwar Mahadev: The Glory of Almighty Shiva

In our journey to explore Srinagar. We finally reached our next destination – Kilkileshwar Mahadev Temple. At a distance of 5 km from Srinagar, Kilkileshwar Mahadev temple is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is nestled just opposite the bank of River Alaknanda. This ancient temple holds great significance.

The Biography

Surrounded by the great Himalayas, cold winds, and the burbling Alaknanda river flowing aside, Chauras is a beautiful place in Srinagar (Garhwal) which is famous for the holy shrine – Kilkileshwar Mahadev temple. Pilgrims during their journey to Char Dham, often come to bow their heads at Kilkileshwar temple to receive the blessings of the almighty.

The presiding deity of this temple is Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of Bhairavlinga. You will also find idols of other deities such as Lord Ganesha inside the temple. There is also a figure of Nandi in front of the main temple. There are small temples of other gods and goddesses such as Devi Durga, Lord Rama, and Lord Hanuman in the temple complex.

The Mythology

Kilkileshwar Mahadev temple is said to be established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. The temple is famous among Shiva devotees and Hindu followers. At the time of Mahashivaratri, and Sawan you will find the temple jam-packed with devotees of Lord Shiva.

The surroundings of the temple offer a perfect view of the natural wealth. The alluring views of the Himalayan range and the rippling sound of River Alaknanda adds gaiety to your spiritual trip.

 Religious Significance

The legend goes back to the time of Mahabharat. Arjun meditated at this place in Indrakeel Mountain to obtain the powerful weapon of victory –the Pashupaat Astra from Lord Shiva.

To test Arjun’s grit and determination, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Bhil and aggravated Arjun to do war with him. Naturally, Arjun lost in the war and realizes that it was Lord Shiva himself who came to test him.

He prays and asks for forgiveness. Impressed by his determination and considering his atonement, Lord Shiva presented him with the Pashupaat Astra. By using this weapon, Arjun defeated Kauravas in the Mahabharat war.

 Other Places to visit

Kilkileshwar Mahadev temple is located in the Chauras area, a beautiful must-watch landscape in the outskirts of Srinagar. This place is quite good for hiking, trekking, camping, and boating. Chauras area is also a perfect picnic spot. People often come here for picnics.

 Best time to visit

Kilkileshwar temple can be visited throughout the year. if you want to relish the natural beauty and splendid views of the region, you can choose the time between October to April. This is the best and suitable time when you can enjoy the original Uttarakhand beauty without any hurdles.
