Beatles Ashram Rishikesh: Secret of Meditation
The Beatles Ashram Rishikesh is famous as Chaurasi Kuti, meaning “84 meditation huts.” In 1960, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi leased the land from the forest department and used money donated by an American heiress to build an ashram. It is situated on a cliff overlooking the Ganges River in the Swargashram area of Rishikesh, away from other ashrams.
The property spans 14 acres and consists of various buildings, including a former temple, residential structures, bungalows, a kitchen, a library, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s home, and the iconic 84 beehive-shaped meditation huts. The unique architecture and the state of decay create an atmospheric setting ideal for exploring.
History of the Ashram
After Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s departure in 1981. The Beatles Ashram was neglected for many years as the lease expired. The surrounding jungle started to reclaim the area and was completely abandoned. I didn’t stay long because I felt uneasy about potential encounters with wild animals due to movement in the trees and bushes. The Rajaji National Park, houses tigers, leopards, wild elephants, monkeys, cobras, and more. It is located just outside the boundary walls.
Fortunately, in early December 2015, the Beatles Ashram reopened as a tourist attraction, providing a safe place for visitors. Currently, it is managed by the Rajaji Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand, and I highly recommend visiting it while in Rishikesh.
The Beatles Connection
In early 1968, when The Beatles were incredibly famous and known by everyone, they made a journey to India, near the Himalayas, in search of something that their fame and wealth couldn’t provide: inner peace. They spent eight weeks in an ashram, a quiet place for spiritual learning, to study meditation. During their time there, they wanted privacy. So no journalists or visitors were permitted to enter.

The Secret Of Beatles
The Beatles departed from the ashram amid accusations against the Maharishi regarding his behavior with women. Years later, John Lennon apologized for his previous statements, and to everyone’s surprise, the Maharishi forgave him instantly. It is possible that some of the people associated with The Beatles, who were often in their company, may have faced issues related to drugs. As a result, the Beatles might have spread the accusations against the Maharishi as a means to divert attention from those problems.

During that period, practices like yoga and meditation were unfamiliar in the Western world, and India was not a popular travel destination (except for the well-known Hippie Trail).
