You must have heard about the place Srinagar. No!! It’s not the Srinagar that the capital of Jammu & Kashmir. It’s a Srinagar that is located in Uttarakhand. No less than the Srinagar of Jammu & Kashmir, this place is blessed with prolific natural wealth. Surrounded by magnificent mountains and beautiful valleys, this place is a mesmerizing tourist destination of Uttarkhand that lies in the way to Badrinath. Famous for its splendid natural locations, this place is a renowned religious centre as well.
Shankar Mutt is one of such religious centre that attracts pilgrims who are on their way to Chardham & Badrinath peregrination. Situated at a distance of 3 km from the main city of Srinagar, this highly mystic temple finds whereabouts between Polytechnic College Srinagar and S.S.B. This temple is believed to be constructed by Shankar Dobhal, an administrator of Garhwal kingdom and so is this ancient temple was named after him.
There are many more interesting facts associated with the temple. This temple has managed to exist even after the 1984 floods in the place. However, the lower part of the temple is filled with tons of rubble caused due to the flood. Nevertheless, this temple has the same relevance that it had earlier.
Shankar Mutt is famous for its eye-catching architectural beauty. The temple has been constructed by cutting the stone pieces. One can find the Shaligram statue of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi in the sanctum sanctorum (Garbhagriha) of the temple. The temple is also known as Thakur Dwara.

There are lots of myths and stories related to the Hindu religion because of which this temple is stated as a holy place.
It is said that Shankar Mutt was established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. The place Srinagar got its name after the Sriyantra, a large stone slab which was used to sacrifice human lives to please God. In order to get rid of such vicious practice, Adi Guru Shankaracharya threw Sriyantra into the river. The slab is still there in Alaknanda river. That was the time when Shankaracharya first agnized the power of Lord Shiva. And so the Shankar math appeared.
There is also a myth associated with the temple which states that Lord Shiva spent his many years meditating in this place which marked this place as a significant one.
This place is also known as Vishnu Mohini Temple as this was the place where Maha Maya Vishnu Mohini’s Swayamvar was held. The event was attended by all-male deities including Rishi Narad.
Also, this temple is known as Ashwatirth based on the myth that Lord Indra performed the Ashwamegh Yagya in this place.
